    Introduction

I've watched Doomsday Preppers, Doomsday Bunkers and National Geographic's American Blackout. I've read about prepping. And I've been through power outages, one that lasted for two days due to a severe storm. To many of you that sounds like nothing. In fact, until this year I never heard of the term bugging out. I don't have a bunker nor do I have anything more than a pantry filled with food and water.

But I have about 50 pounds of well-stored soap. Since 1998, I've been making soap and that's what this book is about—and more. Learn which essential oils have the longest shelf life for the least amount of money. Did you know that African black soap is gentle enough for all skin types? Are there natural liquid soaps with long shelf lives? Just how easy is it to make your own soap? Whether you're crafty or not, you can make long lasting bars of soap with molds you may already have in your kitchen.

It's good to be prepared for a disaster whether natural or manmade. What about those of you who have to go without electricity or gas due to a bad ice storm, flood, tornado, hurricane, etc.? No matter where you are, you'll have access to your favorite kind of soap. You can customize it in your favorite scents and sizes, or just have a plain bar of soap to make you feel a lot cleaner. Or, you can even sell or barter your soap depending upon the situation.

This book contains information about premade soap base, not the kind you make from scratch using lye. Fact: ALL soap contains lye, but the types found in this book have already gone through the saponification process, allowing you to use the easier melt and pour method. In addition, the soap base discussed in The Prepper's Guide to Soap Crafting & Soap Storage can be melted in various ways including in a microwave, on the stovetop with a double boiler, or with a crock-pot or rice cooker. While soap used to be made outdoors in a kettle over an open fire, I have no experience with this method but will provide links in the Recommended Reading Chapter if you want to try that method.

In The Prepper's Guide to Soap Crafting and Soap Storage, you'll discover a few recipes for creating unique soaps using easy to find items that you may already have in your kitchen, pantry or storage room.

No matter what your budget is, you can find most of the items you need in your local supermarket, health food store, coop, or discount store. Many times, I've found soap molds and packaging for less than one dollar!

As in How to Make Handmade Shampoo Bars, you'll see some recipes for both melt and pour
