      Introduction

      One man’s poison ivy

      Is another man’s spinach.

      Ah, poison ivy. Toxicodendron radicans. The plant behind leaves of three – let it be. This leafy organism grows over most of the United States, up into Canada, and down into Mexico. Many people are blissfully unaffected by the toxic oils within poison ivy. Unfortunately for the rest of us, poison ivy can cause a wealth of nasty rashes which drive you absolutely insane for weeks at a time.

      I’m here to help with all of that.

      For many years it seemed that I might not have much of a problem with poison ivy. I’d get a mild reaction, but nothing to worry about. Then I got older. Funny how life thinks that aging isn’t enough of a burden to deal with. You also develop all sorts of new reactions that you never had as a child. This definitely happens with poison ivy, and it happened to me. I’ve had a number of episodes with poison ivy during my adult years – some of them fairly severe.

      I’ve tried pretty much every cure – old and new – in my quest to stop the infernal itching. I’ve tried a variety of soaps and soaks. I’m here to lay out what works, what doesn’t, and what is downright dangerous.

      Let’s begin our quest to understand just how poison ivy works – and how to defeat it!

      What Is Poison Ivy?

      Despite its name, poison ivy isn’t actually an ivy. Toxicodendron radicans is a flowering plant. It’s related to the cashew. It does have three leaves and looks like this:

      Note that it can look redder in the autumn and greener in the spring. Like many other plants, poison ivy has a life cycle. The key is to look for the three leaves off a central stalk. The two opposing leaves are close in against the stalk. The central leaf has a longer petiolule or stem that has it extend out.

      Poison ivy often has a mitten look to the two side leaves, where the part closest to the central leaf is smoother and the part further away is more jagged. The leaves tend to look a bit glossy / shiny.

      Still, leaves come in a variety of shapes and sizes. It’s best to stay away from anything with the three green leaves coming from a central spot.
