INTRODUCTION: WHAT ARE KETOGENIC DIETS?
Dr. Russell Wilder, a physician from the infamous Mayo Clinic, designed the ketogenic diet in 1928 with the primary intention of creating a food based cure for epilepsy. It was highly successful, but unfortunately the diet itself was discarded with the inception of anti-seizure drugs in the 1940’s. However, studies show that ketogenic diets are an effective way to combat seizures when medication is no longer an option.
The idea of these types of diets are simply to restrict carbohydrate intake, and to control the glucose concentration in the blood. A normal body uses mostly carbohydrates to provide the energy needs; carbohydrates are converted to glucose that is then oxidized in the body’s cells to provide energy for it to function.
In the event the body has low carbohydrate levels, our bodies are forced to find other sources of energy, usually resulting in the burning of fat through a process called ‘ketosis’. During ketosis, fats are broken down in the liver into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies are then oxidized to provide energy, replacing carbohydrates, as the main energy source that our bodies use to
