Bulletproof Memory The Ultimate Hacks to Unlock Hidden Powers of Mind and Memory - Marc Collingwood
Chapter 1: An Overview of Memory
brain image 1.jpgIn this chapter you will be exposed to what memory really is and it’s various branches and subcategories which we will discuss.
• There are basically two types of memory which can either be long or short term. The facts stored in Short Term Memory (STM) are usually forgotten after it has served its purpose, while long-term memory (LTM) stays with the person for many years and many a times throughout his/her lifetime. In Bulletproof Method, I will teach you how to surpass Short Term Memory(STM) and directly store information in your Long Term Memory(LTM)
• There are various methods to boost your memory and in the Bulletproof method, I have taken the fastest and most powerful one. But before that we need to understand a bit more about Echelons of Memory
Classes of Memory
img 1 copy.jpgMemory can be subdivided into three respective echelons which include long term, short term and sensory. Sensor memory basically stays for 250 milliseconds after perceiving the information and data. The capacity to glance at a thing then remember exactly how it appeared within a small frame of time is a good illustration of sensory retrieval path and recall.
Short term memory allows a person to remember only for a limited time, not exceeding one and a half minutes. Traditional results have shown that it is not very concise and loses with passage of time. This memory can be improved by technique known as ‘Ghoting’. Many students unknowing apply these techniques but are unable to do it in the most perfect manner. I will teach you this method later on in this book. Saying of this I recall about a ‘savant’, whose short term memory is so powerful that he views Rome from a helicopter just once and ends up making a drawing of the whole city in exact, minutest detail. While this might be an extreme case, but it shows the capabilities of Human Mind, which are Limitless.
As opposed to STM, LTM is the most powerful memory store. Its storage capacity is also immensely titanic.
Let me quote an example. A neuron’s tip, which is like a tip of needle can store information up to 300 libraries each having 12000 books and each book is of 300 pages. I firmly believe that all parts of are brain memory are firmly related to one another.
It is generally believed that technique and interpretation of information are the major factors of how experiences are stored up in ones memory, which is slightly different from rehearsal.
Systematic Organization- Data organized properly in a systematic manner is properly stored in our brain
Uniqueness - When information is associated in a unique manner rather than the regular boring way, it would be much simpler to recall. Loudly speaking out words is more powerful than when you just read information from a book.
Meaning and Understanding- Memory is best retained when one puts more effort towards understanding the meaning of certain information. The more you practice the better your retention and recalling ability.
Attention to Details - People tend to recall long descriptive information more than short unrelated sentences.
Difference due to nature of Information
There are some memory researchers who have categorized long-term memory into declarative and also procedural subtypes. Declarative memory necessitates conscious and repetitive recall.
Declarative memory may also be categorized into episodeic & semantic memory. The former comprises data specific to set contexts like time and space, while semantic memory is concerned with data that are used from autonomous contexts.
Semantic memory allows one to feed abstract information concerning the world, like ‘Delhi is the administrative capital of India.’ On the contrary, episodic memory is utilized in individual memory recollection on issues like feelings, sensations and emotions; also individual correlation of certain time or venues.
Autobiographical memory is related to an individual’s episodic events that are difficult to be eliminated from memory, like your wedding eve or birthdays. This form of visual memory generally results in actual priming plus it’s assumed there’s some visual demonstrational system which underlies this particular event.
Topographical memory refers to ones capacity to be comfortable and be oriented in a set space, consequently one would distinguish and then tag along an itinerary, as well as distinguish known settings.
Methods of Memory Optimization
recall copy.jpgMemorization refers to a system of learning which allows one to recall information in verbatim. Rote learning is the technique that’s used in this mode of memory recalling. Though Bulletproof Method does not emphasize on rote learning.
