About this ebook

“FAST & UNRELENTING”

Matt and Suzy have just met and the first bloom of romance seems promising, but both are keeping secrets. Neither one of them is being straight with the other and when Suzy is brutally murdered it seems that one of these secrets is dark enough to threaten not only Matt’s life but his soul as well.

He receives a macabre visitor who knows all those secrets, a sinister woman who presents him with an ultimatum; a moral dilemma whose stakes are higher than life and death. Another murder must be committed before the clock runs out and Matt must be the one to commit it, but the target is a woman he has never met named Helen, and every indication shows that she is the last person on Earth who deserves to die.

Matt must make a choice and quickly, but he doesn’t like being manipulated or coerced and he is determined to solve the riddle of this diabolical scheme before he is forced to do anything; to expose the identity of his visitor and learn her deadly agenda.

Helen knows nothing of the danger closing in on her, nor the battle of wills between Matt and his adversary, but she has problems of her own. Her sister, Tricia, is in trouble on both sides of the law; trouble likely to put both of their lives at risk. As Helen takes every step she can to help her sister escape from the trap she has found herself in, it seems that catastrophe may arrive before Matt even gets his chance to deliver the killing blow.

Events are racing toward a confrontation on all sides and nothing is as it appears. Lies and manipulation are everywhere and only one thing is certain.

The blood will flow. And there is nothing anyone can do to stop it.

    ACT I

    SCENE I

    MATT’S LIVING ROOM – NIGHT

(Door opens a crack. ENTER MATT who slips in to keep the interior hidden from his visitor. He is dressed smart-casual and is reasonably well-spoken)

MATT: Uh, yeah. Could you hold on a second? I just want to… I want to clean up quickly. I’m really sorry about this.

SUZY: (Still outside) I don’t mind mess. I’m used to it myself.

MATT: You’d mind this mess. It won’t take a minute. (He slips through door and pushes it almost closed) Just wait there.

(MATT moves swiftly around room, picking up discarded items of clothing. He shoves them in a cupboard. Goes to door, spots a men’s magazine with an attractive woman on the front. Shoves it under the sofa. Opens door. ENTER SUZY. She is dressed in clubbing gear and is a little drunk and flirty)

MATT: Okay. That should be okay. I’ve captured all the cockroaches and hidden my porno mags.

SUZY: (Laughs) Oh. Shame. We could have looked at them together. (They both laugh)

MATT: You serious about that? (SUZY gives him a look that says What do you think?) Heh heh. Guess not. (They both laugh)

SUZY: (Puts her arms round MATT’S shoulders) So this is your place? It’s nice.

MATT: (Pulls away) Yeah. Can I… Can I offer you anything? A drink, I mean? Can I get you something to eat?

SUZY: There’s no need to be nervous Matt.

    MATT: I’m not nervous.

SUZY: Yes you are. Here. (She puts her arms round his neck) Does this help?

    MATT: Er…

SUZY: (Kisses him) How about that?

MATT: (PAUSE) Would you like a drink?

SUZY: (Breaks) Yeah. That’d be great. Sure. What have you got?

    MATT: Say something.

    SUZY: Beer?

    MATT: No.

    SUZY: Wine?

    MATT: No.

    SUZY: Cider?

    MATT: No.

SUZY: Why don’t we start with what you have got?

MATT: I’ve got some Jack Daniels.

    SUZY: (Laughs) Okay. Why not!

MATT: I’ll have some too. Do you want Coke or something with it?

    SUZY: Please.

    (EXIT MATT. SUZY noses round)

SUZY: How long have you lived here? (PAUSE) Matt? (LONG PAUSE) Matt? (PAUSE. Disarmed) Matt? Are you there?

    (ENTER MATT)

    MATT: Here we go!

SUZY: (Jumps in surprise) I was calling you.

MATT: Were you? Sorry. I didn’t hear a thing. Here’s your drink. What were you going to ask me?

SUZY: Just how long you’ve lived here.

MATT: A year or so. Not that long. It’s not far from work when I have to go in. I do most of my actual work right here in my study.

SUZY: How long have you lived in the area?

    MATT: Why do you ask?

SUZY: Don’t know. I recognise you a bit. I wondered if we’d met sometime in a past life.

MATT: I’d like to say we had but I don’t recognise you from before tonight. Sorry.

SUZY: Doesn’t matter. Thanks for the drink. I’m not usually a spirits drinker.

MATT: Me neither. I got this for Christmas. I didn’t have the heart to say I wasn’t a big fan.

    SUZY: Shall we get comfortable?

    MATT: Sure.

SUZY: Do you pick women up at nightclubs often Matt?

MATT: Uh, not really. I don’t go to clubs much.

SUZY: Come and sit next to me. Don’t you like clubs?

MATT: Not really. It’s something I always thought I should like but never got into. The music that’s current at the moment isn’t me and I’m embarrassed to say that it’s too loud. I’m going to start sounding like a cock if I’m not careful. It’ll put you right off me.

SUZY: Don’t be silly Matt. I think you’re nice. It’s cute that you worry too much about pleasing me. It’s a refreshing change. Most of the guys I’ve talked to lately have been dicks.

MATT: I can’t believe that someone as pretty as you doesn’t have a boyfriend.

SUZY: Do you think I’m pretty.

MATT: I think you’re gorgeous actually.

SUZY: Maybe you aren’t as nervous as I thought.

    MATT: I’m warming up.

    SUZY: Must be the whisky.

    MATT: Must be.

    (They kiss deeply)

    SUZY: (Laughing) Easy tiger.

    MATT: Sorry. Are you okay?

SUZY: Yeah. Yeah. I’m fine. Kiss me again.

    (They kiss again)

    MATT: Are you okay?

    SUZY: Er… Yeah. I’m fine.

MATT: Am I coming on too heavy?

    SUZY: It’s not that. I’m just… I’m sorry. It’s not you. I’m having a hard time focusing.

    MATT: Oh.

SUZY: I’m so sorry about this Matt but do you mind if I
