Introduction

Everybody thinks they know how to search the Internet. After all, we do it dozens of times a day.

But few people know how to get the best out of the search engines.

Even fewer are aware that there are often better places to look.

And that’s what this book is about: how to search more effectively.

To search the Internet effectively you need to know where to look, how to phrase your question and how to refine the search, so it helps to understand the main types of search service out there and how they work.

As obvious as it might seem, Web searching is a matter of selecting the right words and devising a strategy to find what you are looking for.

Unfortunately, not all search engines use the same rules but it helps to understand the basic way most engines work. Google, for example, uses Boolean logic, as do many of the popular engines. The examples below show how to refine any search and will work for most engines.
