Introduction
It happened that a fire broke out backstage in a theatre. The clown came out to inform the public. They thought it was jest and applauded. He repeated his warning. They shouted even louder. So I think the world will come to an end amid the general applause from all the wits who believe that it is a joke.
Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855)
––––––––
One night you get ready for bed. It’s going to be a busy day at the office tomorrow. As you finish getting ready you hear the normal sounds of the city outside your apartment window, some shouting and general sounds of activity. You’ve heard it all before but as you slowly drift off to sleep those sounds get louder, there is some shooting in the distance when suddenly a blood-curdling scream echoes through the night. It spooks you but you know that you are safe where you are and eventually you drift off into a restless sleep.
––––––––
The next morning you head out into the city and notice the lack of people around. Maybe it’s Sunday so you check your phone to make sure. You see that it is indeed Monday morning but you also notice that your cell phone reception is gone.
––––––––
On the subway, you notice that the carriage is only about half full than on a normal Monday morning and a lot of people look sick, very sick. When you eventually get to the office you see that most of the team appear to be out sick, strange but not impossible.
––––––––
You hear some sporadic reports of violent attacks on the news but don’t think much of it, it’s nearly time to end this strange working day and head home.
––––––––
While waiting for your train on the underground you notice somebody near you suddenly collapse. Plenty of people rush to help and very soon some medics arrive. As you approach your apartment block you see someone being mugged so you hurry to get indoors.
––––––––
Things seem a bit strange so you make yourself a cup of coffee and head to the roof where you normally go to unwind while you gaze across the city. This time things are very different. You can see a lot of smoke and fires scattered throughout the city. You hear the sounds of people screaming coming from every direction. You can see a massive group of people running down your street. There are police officers in the crowd who are also running for their lives. There are even police officers on horseback mixed in with the crowd. They all appear to be terrified of something. What are they running from? Every now and then the police turn to fire on an unseen enemy. Someone in the crowd suddenly starts to attack people around them. The police react immediately and gun them down. You have never seen anything like this before.
––––––––
You try to phone the emergency services to see if you are safe and to find out what is going on but there is no answer. You try to phone friends and family but again there is nobody answering. You run back to your apartment and turn on the TV to see if the local news station is reporting these strange and frightening occurrences but all you get is static. You cycle through all the channels. Some are just static and the rest have a technical difficulties message.
––––––––
You have absolutely no idea what’s going on so you hide behind your window and peek out like a nosey neighbour. Now you can see what’s going on more clearly. The people committing the very violent attacks seem to be everywhere. You see a police officer emptying a full magazine of bullets into one of them but he keeps advancing. It’s as if the bullets are having no effect
