The Wage Worker's Mba - R. Kenneth Kemp
Success
The Method Behind the Madness
I believe in learning by doing. Sitting in a lecture hall absorbing words from an instructor for an hour to an hour and a half borders on physical agony for me. In an age of high college tuition and even higher student loan costs I want to believe that a college degree isn’t the only path to learning and, in turn, becoming successful. As a millennial in this day and age, graduating from college and working for a company for forty years is no longer the norm.
Furthermore, the millennial generation has thrown the national workforce on its head. Every week there are new articles and experts preaching how to handle this seemingly diametric workforce when compared to previous generations. It has left many employers unsure of how to better manage a generation of workers who seem so different from those previous. I hope that these pages might help bridge that gap. This book is a collection of personal work experiences and what each one has taught me; it’s just a bonus that I also happen to be a millennial.
What I have written did not come from academic lectures or a classroom. In college, my favorite instructors were always adjunct professors. They could teach a principle and then had the personal experience coupled with real world application to provide context. In those classes there were fewer times I questioned whether what I was learning would actually prove valuable for the tuition I was paying. It is for that second reason which I have looked back on my own work experiences to organize and write about my observations in how businesses, and in particular management, conduct themselves for better or worse.
This book isn’t meant to only present the viewpoints of a millennial. I flatter myself in thinking that these chapters might help you to adjust your business track and move forward in your career if you feel stagnant. Perhaps you’d like to refine or improve an aspect of your career if you come to realize that is what you need. Maybe all you need is some new perspective or you just really like to read first person narratives, regardless of the subject matter. (And if that is the case, kudos to you.)
I began working in high school. In looking back, that is when these ideas began to take shape. Often I wish I had had that realization sooner and so I hope my delayed knowledge and the parallels which I have drawn can be your gain. I have worked to keep my thoughts open-ended so that as you read you are able to relate to what I share in your own way and more easily personalize it to your own unique situation.
I do wish to emphasize that these observations and interpretations are my own. What I took away from these experiences may not be exactly how you see it. I see no downside to that. It is not a long book and I want you to be able to add to it with your own thoughts. Granted, I hope that my own thoughts can be helpful as you read them. I feel strongly that a worker, regardless
