Chapter 1
Johannesburg, South Africa
Phumzile cried in the cold and quiet night. She was surrounded by a swarm of dead bees and in her arms she held the lifeless body of a fashion model.
In the dwindling bustle of Chris Yobo`s fashion extravaganza, Phumzile Gigaba, Chris Yobo`s Personal Assistant, crept through the back entrance of the venue, to take refuge in the quiet back alley. A Billboard towered above her and it provided the only set of eyes in the dark back alley. The face of Phumzile`s role model, Leticia Rock, was plastered on the Billboard. Leticia Rock`s smiling face exuded confidence. Phumzile looked up to its plastered gaze and she was glad that the face was only an image of her role model, because she considered what she was about to do, quite sinister. She muted the distant sound of thumping music from the venue, when she shut the back door leading to the alley. Away from the light, next to the rubbish dumpster; and snuggled only by her white sweater, she braved the chilly night to indulge on the pleasure and pain of binge eating. Her anxiety withered away with every bite, and for that moment, she didn`t give a care in the world where she was and who was watching.
Her pleasure was stripped bare and her binging session brought to an unpleasant halt. The quiescent alley, vacant of any trouble that could worry Phumzile, was suddenly occupied by a couple of men who came through the door that she had just shut. In their company was a petite model that they violently hauled out of the venue. The men did not have a rogue appearance. They wore black tuxedos which were tailored to exude sophistication and blend in with the night`s festivities. But the men`s actions were far from gentle and their intent could only be described as rogue. They had a firm grip on the model, ruffling her violently as they spoke to her. They were oblivious to Phumzile`s presence, but she was very aware of theirs. Angered by the violence that she was witnessing, she took a deep breath and crouched, to place her chocolate bar on the ground. With her right hand freed, she picked up an empty bottle next to the dumpster. She buckled under her heavy weight, but the physical strain was a small price to pay for saving a fellow woman in need.
The quarrel between the model and the devious gentlemen continued under Phumzile`s watchful eye. But things took an uncanny turn, in the distance, a deafening buzz approached from the night sky. The men became more agitated, the model`s safety seemed destined for a bad ending. Phumzile looked up, this time, Leticia Rock`s placard face was not the only lively stare that hovered above her. A swarm of bees emerged from behind the billboard, and without a second lapsed the whole alley was filled with the sound of buzzing bees, coming down to the alley with brutal intent.
When Phumzile could finally pull her sight away from the awe of the bees in the sky, it was too late. The devious gentlemen had already done harm. The model dropped to the ground, desperately gasping for air as she went down. Phumzile broke the bottle that she was holding in her hand, the broken bottle was her weapon of choice, and she approached as fast as her weary legs could carry her. She dashed to the scene to put up a fight with the devious gentlemen, but the Bees beat her to the scene, stinging the devious gentlemen in unison. Phumzile surged forward; she was neither deterred by the horror of the bees attacking the men, nor was she frightened by the possibility of being stung by the bees. She was determined to put up a fight and save the model. The bees` suicidal pursuit was not enough to deter the devious men and Phumzile`s jolt was just not fast enough. One of the men kneeled over the models body and with the knife that brought her falling to the ground; he started carving mercilessly on the models forehead. The other man stood guard to fight off Phumzile and the bees. He was composed with every sting and Phumzile`s swipe with the bottle resulted in a measly scratch on his chin. His partner in crime was just as unperturbed by Phumzile and the bees. They just gave Phumzile a cold stare and then just when Pumzile thought that things couldn`t get weirder. Just when she thought that the cold stare from the devious gentlemen would surely be followed by a gruesome attack on her. The devious gentlemen burst into an electric fit, much to Phumzile`s awe and fright. They simply vaporised into a cloud and the cloud drifted in the cold air and disappeared into the night sky, living it cold and empty once more.
Phumzile stood quivering with her bloodied broken bottle while gazing up to the sky for answers. None came, and at her feet, the model lay dead with a gruesome mark on her forehead. The mark seemed to be some sought of message that the devious gentlemen deliberately left behind. It was a message that Phumzile could not even begin to fathom and she didn`t try, all she wanted to do was revive the fallen model. The number on the models forehead was six hundred and sixty six, and it had a line struck through it (666).
Chapter 2
The blood drenched scene gave the venue`s security guard a fright as he came running out of the back entrance. He drew his pistol as he approached. He pointed the gun at Phumzile with questionable competence, crunching the drove of Bee carcasses as he came closer.
Ma`am! What on earth have you done?
he asked in bewilderment.
They killed her!
she replied, while still sobbing.
The security guard scanned the scene and saw the broken bottle that Phumzile had used to fight off the devious gentlemen.
You are one sick woman! Step away from the body!
the security guard demanded.
It didn`t look good for Phumzile. All rational pointed to her as the slayer of the fashion model and the vacant alley did little to aid her plea of innocence. She only had the night sky, alley walls and the towering billboard of her role model as her witnesses. With the barrel of the gun pointed at her face, she had no option but to oblige to the security guard`s instructions. She stood up despairingly, taking strained breaths as her heart pounded at the top of her throat.
The scene was a ghastly mash of peculiarity. When the police finally arrived at the scene, Phumzile was still in paralysing shock. She ogled blankly at the
