About this ebook

We know that we are one human race, descended almost certainly from a single homonid, almost certainly a female affected by an incipient event that occurred some five million years ago. What makes us so certain of this is our astonishing personal capacity of free-will and the creative imagination that it yields to us. These capacities, unique to us as humans, have emerged (by cultural evolution) as a consequence from that incipient event. They have enabled us as humankind to conquer the world. We may think of it as a gift. It is a gift that on the global scale with our science and technology has enabled us to become almost as Gods.

Alan Ecob

I'm a retired accountant interested in the interface between classic accounting and orthodox economics. By 'classic' I mean the accounting that emerged from Italy in the 1300s and the advent of consolidated accounting in the USA in the 1890s with the formation of United States Steel. Also interested in philosophy and a fan of Wittgenstein's 'final solution' in his Tractatus. I live in Lane Cove, Sydney, Australia. As a hobby I run a U3A creative writing group. My only hard published book is my M. Phil Thesis: Education as a Solution to the Problems of Western Civilization? available from Sydney University's Fisher Library.

    Introduction

We know that we are one human race, descended almost certainly from a single homonid, almost certainly a female affected by an incipient event that occurred some five million years ago. What makes us so certain of this is our astonishing personal capacity of free-will and the creative imagination that it yields to us. These capacities, unique to us as humans, have emerged (by cultural volution) as a consequence from that incipient event. They have enabled us as humankind to conquer the world.

These capacities, although of only limited individual effect, have enabled us to do this by means of thought that transcends the past – to conceive ideas and perform activities that are truly new and are not merely consequences of the past. Locked in a reality which on the scale of human perception is wholly determined by cause having effect as an ongoing process, how may this newness have effect?

We may think of it as a gift. It is a gift that on the global scale with our science and technology has enabled us to become almost as God. 'Almost', that is, because we continue to allow ourselves to be affected by evil. Just as our capacity to perform good has increased exponentially through the five million years, so also has our capacity to perform evil. At this collective level, the quantum of evil that enmeshes us is enormous. If we are to transcend it, such will require the actions of myriads at the individual level. These individual actions will need to be the result of irretrievable commitment towards furthering the social good. Irretrievable? Yes. Failures will be inevitable. Yet despite continuing failures, the objective must be to never give up. To freely forgive others for their failures and to continue to do one's best for the social good so long as life may endure.

    Chapter 1. In the Beginning

Damn! He said to Himself. It's utterly predictable. And it's going nowhere. It's all becoming too much.

The time was fourteen billion years ago, and our Creator was about to present Himself before His Angels, Archangels, Powers and Principalities for a general meeting. Omnipotent, omniscient, He was the Creator of all that was, is and will be. Yet quite unexpectedly, He now felt this surge of dissatisfaction. The whole meeting would be unnecessary. He could foresee the outcomes of all submissions, all requests. Worst of all, everything said to Him would just mirror back His own thoughts. It was becoming boring. Something new was required.

A radical thought struck Him. What He needed was a new form of life to converse with – to really converse with as a living being made in His own image, able to discuss issues and ideas with Him at His level, yet whose thoughts could at times be different from His own. This living being, this new Personality, would pay Him proper respect as the Creator of all that was, is, and will be, yet not be overawed by the association, nor afraid to express contrary thoughts. Of course to create a living Personality would be
