PART I

HEALTH

Chapter 1

NUTRITION

Without question, quality nutrition is essential to achieve and maintain optimal health. After all, the protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids provided to your body through food are what allow the body to function. When the body is depleted or deprived of the nutrients it requires for its basic functions and processes, the results can be life-altering or even life-threatening. But, when the body is supplied with an abundance of nutrients that promote the functioning of every system throughout the body, the results can be extraordinary!

If you could add an element to your daily diet that would not just enable your body to simply function, but actually encourage it to thrive, wouldn’t you do it? What if that single dietary addition could improve every aspect of your life from mental functioning and physical performance, to improved mood balance to increased energy, to even increased weight loss and reduced toxicity? Most people would jump at the chance to experience all there is to offer. The great news is that this addition exists, and is none other than ginger!

To gain the benefits detailed throughout this chapter, you need to consume 2–4 tablespoons (or the dried equivalent) of fresh ginger per day. A 1" piece of ginger will produce approximately 1 tablespoon of freshly grated ginger, which is equivalent to 1 teaspoon of ground ginger. How you choose to ingest your ginger is up to you! Add it to a smoothie, use it to spice up soups and salads, or make some magic with your favorite meals. As long as you get the ginger you need, you’ll be on the road to better nutrition before you know it. So let’s take a look at how you can use ginger to move from just functioning to thriving!

1. CONTRIBUTES B VITAMINS

The B vitamins are essential, whether you hope to improve your immunity, increase your metabolic functioning, or maintain heart, nerve, and muscle health. Ginger contributes the six B vitamins found in plant foods, and improves the processes responsible for the absorption and utilization of those vitamins, which increases their effectiveness. With the addition of ginger to your diet, you may begin to experience more of the benefits that result from having essential B vitamins in the diet, which include:

Vitamin B1 (thiamin): converts carbohydrates from food to energy; maintains health of skin, hair, and nails; promotes healthy functioning of the cardiovascular and nervous system; maintains heart health; and fights fatigue.

Vitamin B2 (riboflavin): promotes healthy growth of bones, muscles, and tissues; maintains reproductive health; aids the body’s process of converting carbohydrates to energy; and is essential for red blood cell
