A fun read for the native, and a tremendously resourceful encyclopedic reference guide for the tourist, Ryan 'We miss ya in da Chi, Ry' Ver Berkmoes strikes solid gold with this gorgeous glossy paperback that covers nearly every corner of the great Windy City. And just for the review record, I should add that I made up the 'We miss ya in da Chi, Ry' moniker, only after Ver Berkmoes - a storied journalist - parted ways with Chicago to live abroad...in Europe.

However, his coveted effort, Chicago (Lonely Planet Guide), is a legend in itself. Seriously. You can't have Chicago without magnificent architecture. And Ryan's got you covered here. Next, you can't live in or even visit Chicago and expect there to ever be an outlet for boredom, unless of course you just want to be boooring.

    (Smiles) ...

So long as you have this packed information guide, you will never be in need of another one; for it features just about everything one can possibly desire for excitement purposes in the City of Chicago: Architecture, dining, museums, sightseeing tours, blues clubs, jazz clubs, theater, nightlife, and so much more. Its Facts for the Visitor section alone spans (30) pages. And there's also the Things To Do and See section, the Places to Stay section, the city's many neighborhoods - bordered by the South, North, and West sides, and finally, the ultimate feature: Delicious things to eat!

What's your edible pleasure? Deep dish pizza? Ribs? Gyros? Pierogies? Greek salads? Mozzarella sticks with a side of marinara sauce? Garrett's popcorn? Eli's cheesecake? Fried chicken livers from Harold's Chicken Shack? Giant soft pretzels with a side of spicy mustard? Mmmm ... Mouthwatering. Indeed, Chicago is home to some of the finest edibles in the world. And many of her most beloved eateries are showcased here in the Chicago (Lonely Planet Guide). Oh, I do declare.

When you're in Chicago, you reserve the right to splurge! And no one, especially not anyone of the tourist like, should be without this classic Ryan Ver Berkmoes edition. It is truly the five-star jewel of a well-researched collection. A must-have.

Very good general guide to Chicago. Helpful hotel and restaurant listings, good coverage of neighborhoods, with very good detail maps and walking tours. Less thorough on museums than Michelin. Also, as with Michelin, architecture buffs will want a more detailed guide. Overall, however, this is broadly useful, and appealingly small -- fits right into a purse or pocket.
