Introducción
30 millones de víctimas y contando. Llegaría Diciembre de 1918, y el flagelo de la postguerra no aparecía aún en el territorio ecuatoriano. La prensa escrita y los cables proyectados en las salas de cine, llamados por la gente cinematógrafos, solían ser los únicos medios entre la sosegada vida quiteña y las convulsiones de un mundo que parecía que se caía a pedazos. Los cablegramas y telegramas fueron censurados constantemente por las estrictas leyes de prensa, En Bogotá ya no hay gente
decía un cable llegado a las oficinas de sanidad de la capital de la república, confirme aquella noticia que socava en descabellada
respondía el subdirector de sanidad de Quito.
El director de uno de los prestigiosos periódicos de la ciudad demandaba información por parte del Ministerio del Interior y Sanidad, y aquel respondía si le digo que parece que somos los únicos vivos en esta parte de las Américas usted lo publicaría
, ante todo debemos mantener la calma entre la población es que acaso quiere incitar a esta gente a la agitación
. Luego de un vaivén de cables el periódico el Día publicó, 30.000 víctimas en Bogotá, 15 mil en Lima, lo mismo en Santiago de Caracas no tenemos noticias
. En la siguiente página dicho periódico publicó , qué hacer en caso de contraer Gripe. A finales del siglo XIX, una epidemia de grippe influenza
atacó al mundo entero y Quito no fue la excepción aquella vez, el uso de aceites mentolados, y de solución de quinas bromoquinina
bastaron para confrontar la enfermedad.
Mientras tanto las fronteras se mantuvieron cerradas de manera estricta, en especial la que comparten con el vecino del Sur. El estado constante de guerra con el Perú, y el brote de peste bubónica en dicho país mantenían aquella frontera con un cerrojo hermético. El puerto principal del Ecuador, Guayaquil, se mantenía con una serie de políticas aduaneras destinadas a no permitir el ingreso de una sola maleta
, políticas diseñadas por el equipo del médico Hideyo Noguchi, investigadores de la fundación Rockefeller que extrañamente estuvieron en el Ecuador entre Octubre y fines de Noviembre de 1918, los meses críticos de la gripe española, y en los que murió la mayor parte de las víctimas. En sus comunicados los galenos estadounidenses, daban cuenta de que esta enfermedad era algo que no se había visto jamás la única medida posible era sostener la barrera aduanera el mayor tiempo posible.
En la capital, las medidas que se planificaron por parte de las instituciones de Sanidad, Facultad de Medicina, y comisiones de Salud de los Municipios; no obstante, se limitaron a ser dispositivos de precaución destinados a combatir un brote de influenza, ahora conocida como gripe tipo B o resfriado común. A la vez, dentro de la oficina de sanidad se daba por hecho que no era la misma situación, en el caso de arribar esta enfermedad al país podrían morir miles. Los confidenciales que circulaban entre el directorio de sanidad y la prensa se tornaban cada vez más pesimistas. Diciembre 10 de 1918 Henos aquí esperando que este flagelo de la gripe española llegue como ha de ser, a este país les recomiendo señores en los periódicos prestar información al público sobre cómo cuidarse, y de que deben tomar en el caso de estar con síntomas

La muerte púrpura
ORIGEN HISTÓRICO Y DESARROLLO DE LA GRIPE ESPAÑOLA

La pandemia: su origen y su desplazamiento hacia Europa.
Corría la primavera de 1918, la Primera Guerra Mundial del siglo XX, llegó a su fin. El primer armisticio firmado entre el ejército prusiano y los aliados obligó la capitulación de Hindenburg, y su repliegue hacia el territorio alemán. Mientras tanto los países aliados siguieron enviando tropas para refrescar las primeras líneas de combate. Entre los soldados viajó, entonces, el virus de la gripe variedad A (H1N1) a la cual se la denominó gripe española
.
Esta enfermedad dejó en menos de 10 meses un saldo de muertos superior al de 40 millones de víctimas confirmadas. (Paterson&Pyle, 1991: 4-21) (Tauberbenguer, 2005: 98). De esta manera podemos afirmar que el número de fallecimientos debido a esta enfermedad, fue superior a los que dejó la guerra mundial.
Adicionalmente, debe conocerse que un tercio de la población mundial de ese entonces, es decir alrededor de 500 millones de personas, fueron infectados.[1] Esta información proviene de los casos clínicamente registrados. (Taurerberguer&Morents, 2006: 15), lo cual deja la certeza que hubo un número pavoroso de enfermos a causa de la gripe española
y que por una u otra razón no fueron reportadas, asunto que también deja la interrogante ¿cuántos millones en realidad murieron a causa de esta ´pandemia?
La primera ola de la pandemia de influenza se dio entre Marzo y Junio de 1918. El nivel de casos disminuyó de manera radical durante el verano, para volver a aparecer en una segunda y tercera oleadas, de mayor incidencia y letalidad si comparamos con la primera oleada. Aquello se produjo de esta manera: la segunda oleada ocurrió desde los meses de Octubre a Diciembre de 1918, y, la tercera onda expansiva de la enfermedad se produjo desde mediados de Enero a finales de Febrero de 1919 (Taurenbenger&Morents, 2006: 16)
Para el registro histórico es de señalar que esta pandemia denominada gripe española
fue la antesala de varias pandemias que azotaron a la humanidad en el siglo XX, no obstante de ellas hubo dos que por su morbi-mortalidad deben ser recordadas porque también produjeron un número elevado de víctimas: la llamada gripe asiática aparecida en 1957 y provocada por el subtipo A (H2N2); y la tercera provocada en 1968 por el
