Coconut Oil, Miracle Worker - Margaret Lowe

    2. What Makes Coconut Oil So Great?

COCONUT OIL IS AN ABSOLUTELY ideal solution for fostering health and beauty from the inside out. It boasts an incredible number of health benefits when used internally, is easily and deliciously incorporated into almost any recipe, and is a remarkable all-in-one beauty product as well. Let’s examine in more detail some of the ways coconut oil can improve your life.

    Coconut Oil For Health

SINCE THE 1950S, SATURATED fat has been portrayed as something to completely avoid. Coconut oil is a saturated fat, but it is important to understand that not all saturated fats are created equal. Indeed, saturated fat is an essential nutrient that is required by the body in order for it to maintain proper cellular function. Coconut oil has the highest amount of saturated fats, at 92%, but well over half of those are made up of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA). MCFAs are immediately converted by your liver into energy rather than being stored as fat.

The most important MCFA in coconut oil is lauric acid. Coconut oil is made up of about 50% lauric acid. Lauric acid (which is found in high concentrations in a mother’s breast milk) is critical for immune development and function, which is why it is added to infants’ formula. But it’s not only babies that need lauric acid. It’s an essential nutrient for all of us in order to keep our immune systems functioning optimally. The body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, a monoglyceride that can actually destroy lipid-coated viruses such as HIV and herpes, influenza, measles, gram-negative bacteria, and protozoa such as giardia lamblia. Lauric acid also increases the good cholesterol in our blood and lowers bad cholesterol by promoting its conversion to pregnenolone, a molecule that is a precursor to many of the hormones our bodies need.

Coconut oil contains the most lauric acid of any substance on Earth. This is undoubtedly part of what makes it so medicinally useful—both when taken internally and applied externally.

Coconut oil is also a proven brain booster. A now-famous study, published in 2006 in the journal Neurobiology of Aging, indicated that the administration of MCFAs in 20 subjects with Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairment resulted in significant increases in ketone bodies (within only 90 minutes of treatment). Ketone bodies are associated with significant cognitive improvement in those with less severe cognitive dysfunction.

In addition to its immune system and brain strengthening powers, coconut oil also promotes heart health, supports proper thyroid function, and speeds up recovery from illnesses.

Coconut Oil for Cholesterol and Weight Loss

THE BREAKDOWN OF MCFAS, found plentifully in coconut oil, in the liver leads to efficient burning of energy. One 2009 study found that overweight women who consumed 30 milliliters (about 2 tablespoons) of coconut oil daily for 12 weeks not only did not gain more weight, but actually had lowered amounts of abdominal fat, a type of fat that is difficult to shed and contributes to heart problems.

Coconut oil is thermogenic. In other words, eating it tends to increase energy expenditure (fat burning) compared to the same amount of calories from other fats. In one study, 15 to 30 grams (1 to 2 tablespoons) of MCFAs per day increased energy expenditure by 5%, totaling about 120 calories per day. Several other studies confirm these findings. When humans replace the fats they are eating
