      I get excited when people tell me they want to start their own small business. Nothing could be more exciting than starting a business from scratch and earning extra income. Nothing beats the anticipation and excitement of wondering just how far the business could go!

      There are many reasons to start a business. Some people have always wanted to be an entrepreneur and have finally decided to go for it. Others start a business because they need to earn extra cash in addition to their nine-to-five job wages. Some people start a small business with the hope of quitting their day job at some point in the future. Still others are stay at home moms who want to stretch themselves in other ways during the day.

      Whatever your reason for wanting to start a small business, I am excited for you! Creating a business will be one of the most challenging yet most rewarding things you ever do.

      In my experience, individuals new to business form two camps. Those in the first camp know they want to start a business, but have no idea what kind of business to start. Those in the second camp of people pick the first business idea that pops into their head and start running with it, often to find, down the road, that their choice wasn't a great one.

      This book is for both types of small business beginners. It is for those who want to earn additional income but have no idea where to start.

      It's not enough to just pick any small business idea and go for it, you need to pick the right idea for you! You are unique, and your business should match your passions and personality. How will you discover the right idea for you?

      We will begin by brainstorming the topic of your business. The topic is the theme around which your business is built.

      Next, we will brainstorm about your personality and what you hope to achieve with your business. These elements play a major role in the type of business that is a good fit for you. The business type is the form the business takes such as online store or blog.

      After brainstorming, we will explore all the various types of businesses. Detailing all your possible choices will allow you to make the best business decision.

      Finally, we'll bring it all together, and you'll craft the perfect small business idea for you. Your business idea is the marrying of the right business topic and the right business type. When the two come together, you have your ideal business idea!

      I have started many small businesses over the past decade. Some of those businesses have worked out well and others have not. I've learned through trial and error the importance of being selective about the type of business to start, and about choosing a business that aligns with my personality and passions. What have I dabbled with? Craft shows, blogging, Etsy selling, podcasting, and selling on Amazon, to name a few! I have thoughtfully considered why some of these ideas worked better for me than others did. Throughout my business endeavors I have heard the stories of hundreds of small business owners.
