    Introduction

    WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT

In spite of a whole lot of literature on success, it is still elusive to most - and it will always be.

This is true whether you are working hard at a job or career, practicing a profession, or building your own business. How often have you heard a truly competent person say that he or she is working long hours and is focused on challenging goals and still not making it?

This book explains why all the usual advice to succeed – excellent advice no doubt – do not work for most. But take heart.

My years of working with captains of industry, senior managers, and administrative staff in many Asian countries, have given me valuable insights on the journey to success. I have associated with hard-working people of different nationalities, academic backgrounds and professional experience, and observed various approaches and styles in their pursuit of success.

I have noticed a common something in all who have succeeded in a job, profession or business. The secrets of what makes some people successful and how they are able to succeed in their personal and work life are the central insights of this book.

What is this something which I call a secret?

After my big reveal, you will understand why working hard, setting goals, and running fast to finish ahead of the pack are not enough. By themselves, they do not guarantee success. There is a missing element, something behind the secret of success.

This book is for people in the workplace, self-employed professionals and business owners in search of a path to success.

"It is also for all those who don’t think they can be really successful, because they can be." Author

In a way this book is a wake-up call to those who fear they will get stuck at the dead end of a career, profession or business and, like Sisyphus, keep pushing the boulder up the mountain only to have it roll down again and again. But it need not be so. I am putting the choice of how successful you want to be in your hands.

This is not a motivational book. Neither is it a prayer book, a develop-a-good-mental-attitude book nor a what-successful-people-do book. It is also not an attitudinal or aspirational book.

It’s a grounds-up, down-to-earth how to achieve success book that, even skeptics agree, works. So will you.

Let’s see what has been tried and failed

It’s not enough to read books about success.

Similarly, it’s not enough to look at what successful people do.

Are you at the threshold of a career, armed with a good education, hard and soft skills and exceptional talent, but can’t get a foothold in the workplace?

Are you still not getting ahead in your profession despite years of experience in your field of expertise?

Are you running your own business, working 24/7, but still struggling to make a mark in your industry?

Are you an older worker with nothing to show for the number of years you have worked?

Are you giving it your all and still not achieving the results you desire?

If your answer is yes, this book is for you.

To many, success seems to be reserved for a chosen few whose stars may have been aligned at the right time and the right place. Did they instinctively know and subconsciously apply the secret of success?

Through this book, you will understand the secret behind success and what you can do to claim it for yourself. I am sharing with you the universal truths that are sufficient to earn success, and the tools and techniques that will actually get you there. Success will no longer be the unreachable star only a few can achieve.

    The choice is yours.

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to all who aim for success but don’t know how to achieve it, and those who work hard to achieve it, and know they will.

    Acknowledgements

I want to thank the writers and teachers who have contributed to my professional life in significant ways. If they are not all credited for their thoughts and teachings, it is because I have not kept a record of who said what. Suffice it to say that what I present in this book is what I have internalized, and there is neither attempt nor intention to pass off their ideas as mine.

There are some who have affected my thinking more than others. I mention them with affection and gratitude:

Professor U Khin Mg Kyi, Institute of Economics, University of Rangoon, my mentor in the 1960s.

Peter Drucker, whose books I have read from cover to cover, and who has had the greatest influence in my management career.

Robert Townsend and his unique views in Up the Organization

Gaby Mendoza of the Asian Institute of Management, friend and partner, for his invaluable guidance in many undertakings.

Fil Alfonso of the Asian Institute of Management, friend and partner, for opening many doors of opportunity and providing insights on how successful people make it.

Rene Domingo, of the Asian Institute of Management, my guru in quality management.

Very special mention to a dear family friend, Mildred Myra Salonga, who came to my rescue in making this book easily understood on first read.

There are countless others I have not named to whom I owe a debt of gratitude. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference.

    THE SECRET OF SUCCESS

The world owes you nothing, except opportunity.

You Don’t Have To Be A Shark

    Robert Herjavec

In its simplest form success means getting to where you want to be.

To an employee pursuing a job and career, success may mean rising to higher levels in the organization with the salary to show for it, and becoming financially secure.

To one practicing a profession – doctor, lawyer, engineer or architect - success may mean being pursued for one’s expertise and attracting the clientele that can boost one’s reputation.

To an entrepreneur, success may mean growing the business and being financially independent.

For the majority, success is measured in a life free from financial burdens, a comfortable house and fancy car, legacy money for the children and grandchildren with enough for retirement, and being able to indulge in the good life from time to time. But such is
