INTRODUCTION
HOW TO READ THE BIBLE
Some years ago, I had a youth minister on my staff named Tim, who was quite a character. He and his family were a situation comedy looking for a place to happen. A case in point is what happened to them one Friday evening. They returned home late to discover that their dog, Dallas, had somehow gotten through the backyard fence and was lost somewhere out there in the neighborhood. Good father and dog lover that he is, Tim dutifully went out into the night in search of Dallas the dog.
As he walked the streets of Houston at 1:00 a.m., calling, Dallas! Dallas!
a Houston police officer thought he sounded strange and looked suspicious. He stopped Tim and asked him who he was and what he was doing. Tim explained, and the police officer was most sympathetic. After getting a description of the dog, the police man promised Tim that he would watch for him as he made his patrols through the neighborhood.
Tim continued the search a little while longer with no luck and finally gave up for the night, went home, and went to bed. But at 3:30 a.m., the front door bell rang loudly. Tim sprang out of bed and ran to answer the door in his T-shirt and boxer shorts. It was the police officer, who said, Tim, I think I found your dog. Come quick. Get in the squad car and let's check it out.
Tim ran out in his T-shirt and boxer shorts and jumped into the police car, and off they went. Sure enough, it was their dog, Dallas. They caught him, put him in the police car, and headed back toward home. Suddenly, the radio in the police car crackled, and a dispatcher told the police officer to go as soon as possible to an address on Riverview Drive to investigate a disturbance there.
Hey! Wait a minute,
said Tim. That's my house. That's my address.
The policeman called the dispatcher and asked the nature of the problem at that residence. The dispatcher said, A lady called and said her front door bell rang at 3:30 a.m. Her husband went to answer it and never returned. She said she heard the front door slam, and she thinks her husband has been kidnapped—in his underwear!
We can never master the Bible; we can only be mastered by it and the One it reveals.
Now, I told you that they are a situation comedy looking for a place to happen. Soon everything was cleared up and straightened out. And as they say, All's well that ends well.
But there is a point here worth noting, namely, this: sometimes we can get so mixed up. Things can get so complicated for us. Even when our intentions are the best, we can get confused and mixed up.
It's true in our life experiences, and it is also uniquely true with the Bible. We can get so confused and perplexed about the Bible. We can get so mixed up by people who claim to know the Bible. This is especially true if we don't know what the Scriptures are or how to approach them. The truth is that very few people really know how to read the Bible. Some, in desperation, have turned to the Scriptures for strength, for comfort, for answers, for the word of life—only to come up empty because they don't know how to find its treasures. You see, the person who is looking for a way to master the Bible in three easy lessons will always be disappointed.
In the first place, we can never master the Bible; we can only be mastered by it and the One it reveals. In the second place, the Bible is so immeasurably rich that the human mind cannot possibly embrace it all in a few feeble attempts.
How do we read the Bible so that it really comes alive for us?
So the question is this: How do we read the Bible so that it really comes alive for us? How can we let its great truths touch us, inspire us, stretch us,change us, and warm our hearts? How can it bring us to a deeper relationship with God and a deeper understanding of God and what he means life to be? How do we read the Bible without getting bogged down, lost, discouraged, or confused?
We joke a lot about the Bible and our lack of knowledge regarding it. Remember the one about the college student who was asked on an exam to name the four Gospels. He answered Jesus, Moses, Buddha, and Confusion.
Or how about the little boy who was asked in Sunday school to draw a picture of something in the biblical account of the Christmas story. He turned in a picture of an airplane with four heads in the cockpit. When the teacher asked about it, he explained that it was Mary,
