    2004

    Introduction

Readers first introduced to the fiction of Kelly Link are often delightfully surprised to discover an offbeat style of writing unlike anything they have experienced from other writers. Link's story The Faery Handbag provides a fine example of her work. It is the story of a contemporary American teen whose grandmother tells her that she has the population of her hometown, in the mysterious European country of Baldeziwurlekistan, living in the purse she constantly carries around with her. She drops food and library books into the purse to keep the population in there fed and entertained.

Genevieve, the story's narrator, starts out as skeptical as anyone would be about her grandmother's tales of life in Baldeziwurlekistan and her incredible claims about things that defy reality but comes to accept how these stories, true or not, can help her cope with the difficulties of life for a girl today. Link's way of mixing modern life with fantastic events with a straight-faced factual tone, highlighting how weird life can be for young adults, has made her one of the most acclaimed writers of fantasy and magical realism today.

The Faery Handbag was originally published in 2004 in the anthology The Faery Reel, edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling. It won the Hugo Award in 2005 for Best Novelette and the Nebula Award for Best Novelette the following year. It is available in Link's story collection Magic for Beginners (2005) and is available online at the site for Small Beer Press, which she cofounded.
