    Introduction

Puerto Rican American author Judith Ortiz Cofer was an author of poetry, fiction, and essays that especially delve into aspects of intercultural lives, in which life and family transcend languages and national borders. She wrote a number of short stories featuring teenage protagonists and perspectives, including Catch the Moon. Protagonist Luis is a young man with whom many readers will identify: his mind is actively engaged, if not exactly in the ways authority figures want it to be engaged, which sometimes leads him into trouble. Naomi is also a young woman who easily evokes readers' empathy, as she shows due concern for appearances, but the true heart of her personality is her art. These two young people cross paths in, of all places, an automotive junkyard, where Luis needs to come and where Naomi comes to find something she needs. With themes of crime and punishment, death and mourning, and life and work underlying the story, Catch the Moon shows how, for those in need—but especially for those who put in the time—life can bring healing and love. The story is included in Cofer's youngadult collection An Island like You: Stories of the Barrio (1995), which in 1996 was named by the American Library Association (ALA) one of the year's best books and won the ALA Reforma's Pura Belpré Medal for narrative in the award's inaugural year.

    Author Biography

Judith Ortiz was born in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico, on February 24, 1952, to Fanny Ortiz and Jesus Lugo, who would enlist in the US military when Judith was still a toddler, believing that his daughter and son would live better lives if they were raised and educated in the United States. By the time she was four, they had officially immigrated, living primarily in Paterson, New Jersey, while Lugo worked at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. They were practicing Catholics. While Ortiz's father promoted English usage and American cultural understanding as much as possible, her mother remained fonder of life in Puerto Rico and made a point of speaking Spanish with her children. Whenever the father sent a message home indicating he
