      Introduction

      I Am David is a novel for children by Danish writer Anne Holm. Published in Danish in 1963 as David, it was translated into English as I Am David in 1965 in London. The US edition was titled North to Freedom. I Am David tells the story of a twelve-year-old boy named David who escapes from a concentration camp somewhere in Eastern Europe (likely Bulgaria, although the country is never named) in the 1950s or early 1960s. He travels alone across the continent, following the instructions given to him by a man who arranged his escape. He was told to head for Denmark, where he will be safe, and if he achieves his goal, he will be reunited with his mother. Notable for the fact that it alludes to subjects that were normally absent from children's literature, the novel proved extremely popular, and by the time of Holm's death in 1998 it had sold over two million copies.

      Author Biography

      Anne Holm was born Anne Lise Elfe (sometimes styled Else Anne Lise) on September 10, 1922, in Aal, Jutland, Denmark. Her parents emigrated with her to the United States when she was one year old, but illness forced her mother to return with her child to Denmark. Her mother's continuing ill health resulted in the girl's being raised mostly by her grandmother. Her mother died of tuberculosis when she was three and a half years old, which brought to an end the efforts of her father to reunite the family in the United States. The youngster was then adopted, much against her father's will, by Viggo Marius and Elvira (Jensen) Rahbek, a childless couple who lived not far away. She then lived in comfortable circumstances for a year or so, until her adoptive father lost his job as managing director of a factory. The family then endured less favorable financial circumstances, but she
