    Introduction

    Time Flies is a one-act play written by David Ives. It was first performed in 1997 at Primary Stages, an off-Broadway theater in New York City. (Off-Broadway is a term used to refer to New York City theatrical productions that are not staged in the major theaters in the district surrounding Broadway; usually the term describes avant-garde, experimental plays or productions, often written by new or unknown authors, performed before smaller audiences.) The production was part of an evening of six one-acts by Ives titled Mere Mortals and Others. Although Ives has written a number of full-length plays, he is best known for his one-act sketches, including those in Mere Mortals and Others and an earlier collection, All in the Timing, consisting of plays he wrote between 1987 and 1993.

    In discussing Ives's work, critics often use such words as witty, madcap, snappy, and dizzying, as well as intelligent, to refer to the author's comic sensibility. Indeed, most, but not all, of his plays are comedic, usually capturing brief moments in time and examining them from quirky and unusual perspectives. Time Flies is no exception. The play features two lonely young mayflies, Horace and May, who meet and are immediately attracted to each other. Sadly, though, as the two try to live out a courtship ritual at May's pond, they turn on a television to watch a broadcast of Swamp Life, a nature documentary narrated by real-life environmentalist and television host Sir David Attenborough.
