    Introduction

Michael Chabon's The Little Knife tells the story of Nathan Shapiro, a ten-year-old boy on vacation with his family while his parents edge closer and closer to the argument that will finally split their family apart. Dr. and Mrs. Shapiro try to keep their anger toward each other hidden from their two sons, but in a rented cabin at the beach along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Nathan and his younger brother cannot help noticing the increasing hostility. For a while, Nathan entertains the hope that he can get his parents to put aside their differences, but when it becomes clear that separation is inevitable, he blames himself. Eventually, the guilt he feels makes him devise a plan that will make his parents' lives even more difficult.

The Little Knife begins a sequence of five stories that form the last half of Chabon's 1991 collection A Model World and Other Stories. The stories follow Nathan through his parents' break-up, their divorce, and their subsequent remarriages, and the effects on his emotional development as he grows toward adulthood.

Chabon is considered a premier fiction writer, known internationally for such novels as The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Wonder Boys, and his Pulitzer Prize–winning The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. Esquire magazine has listed him among its 75 most Influential People of the 21st Century. At the same time that he continues to produce lauded fiction he has branched out into popular entertainment, writing for films, producing works in the horror and science fiction genres, and contributing to graphic novels such as The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist and Justice Society of America.
