    Introduction

    The American poet Randall Jarrell stated in an article published in 1950 in Partisan Review that e.e. cummings will remain popular for a long time because he is one of the most individual poets who ever lived. Jarrell's assessment has been echoed throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first by readers and scholars alike. One of cummings' most popular pieces is the love poem since feeling is first, which first appeared in Is 5, a collection of his poetry that was published in 1926. The collection was highly praised, and the poem has been widely anthologized. One such anthology is the fourth edition of The Heath Anthology of American Literature.

    In since feeling is first, cummings presents a young man who is trying to convince his lady to indulge in her passions for him. In order to accomplish this, the speaker carefully constructs an argument that he hopes will prompt her to accept him as her lover. Cummings presents two themes in this argument: to privilege emotional responses to experience over intellectual ones and to live fully in the moment.
