    Platero and I

    Juan Ramón Jiménez

    1917

    Introduction

Platero and I by Juan Ramón Jiménez, is a collection of vignettes, or prose poems, that describe the relationship between the narrator and Platero, his donkey. A much shorter version of the work was first published in 1914, but the longer, definitive version was released in 1917. This longer version is available in English (translated from Spanish by Antonio T. de Nicolás) from iUniverse.com publishers. Both English, Spanish, and dual-language editions are readily available in hardcover and paperback.

Jiménez is known primarily as a poet, and the short pieces have a lyrical, poetic quality. There is no conventional story line; the vignettes convey a series of impressions of Platero, the narrator's emotions, and the natural beauty of Moguer, his rural hometown. The book, though not well known in the United States, is a well-loved classic in Spanish-speaking countries.

Jiménez's lyrical descriptions of nature, poetic metaphors, and philosophical musings elevate the simple story of a man and his donkey beyond a mere book for children to a moving and beautiful portrait of friendship.

    Author Biography

Jiménez was born in Moguer, a small town in the Andalusian region of southern Spain, on December 24, 1881. His father, Victor Jiménez, was a successful vintner, and so Juan Ramón had a privileged childhood. The youngest of four children, he was a sensitive child who had a love of nature. At the age of eleven, Jiménez was sent to a Jesuit secondary school in Puerto de Santa Maria; at fifteen, he finished his studies and returned home to Moguer.

Jiménez was a talented artist, and after his secondary education he went to Seville to study painting. In addition to painting, he also began writing poetry, and early success getting his poems published in newspapers and magazines convinced him to choose poetry over painting. Two of his greatest literary influences were the celebrated Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío and Spanish poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer. When Darío read some of Jiménez's poetry, he was very impressed; he invited Jiménez to join him and some other modernist poets in Madrid. While in Madrid, Jiménez wrote his first two published volumes of poetry, Almas de violeta (Violet Souls) and Ninfeas (Water Lilies). Though his work showed promise, these early poems were marred by excessive sentimentality and melancholy.
