Nothing But the Truth: A Documentary Novel

Avi

1991

Introduction

Nothing But the Truth: A Documentary Novel, published by Orchard Books in 1991, is a highly regarded book written by prolific children's author Avi. Named a Newbery Honor Book by the American Library Association in 1992, this novel reflects Avi's ability to create a complex, thought-provoking narrative that makes a compelling statement about American culture. Nothing But the Truth is considered one of Avi's best coming-of-age books.

In the novel, Avi explores issues of power, control, honesty, hypocrisy, patriotism, and the complicated nature of the truth. The narrative focuses on ninth grader Philip Malloy, an intelligent but underachieving student and aspiring track star, and his antagonistic relationship with his English teacher, Miss Narwin. Philip hums along to the Star-Spangled Banner each morning, even though students are required to be silent while it is played. Miss Narwin considers Philip's actions disruptive and has him suspended from school. His suspension turns into a media circus focused on patriotism. School administrators force both teacher and student out of the school at novel's end.

Nothing But the Truth is based on a true story. Avi presents the complicated nature of truth by writing the novel as a series of documents such as memos, diary entries, and letters as well as transcripts of conversations. He allows readers to draw their own conclusions about who is in the right. As Loudoun County Public Library system spokeswoman Beth Wiseman told Charity Corkey of the Washington Post, What's thought to be the truth can be presented in many different ways. At times, it's the combination of many pieces that is the truth.

Author Biography

Avi was born Edward Irving Wortis on December 23, 1937, in New York City, the son of Dr. Joseph and Helen Wortis. His father worked as a psychiatrist while his mother was a social worker; both were also authors. Avi was raised in Boston among an extended family that included painters and writers. His family also supported radical political causes, and political debates among family members were common in his childhood. Avi became an avid reader but suffered from a learning disability called dysgraphia that made it hard to write. School was difficult for him, but Avi persevered and found a mentor in high school who helped teach him the basics of writing.

Avi graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a B.A. in 1959 and M.A. in 1962. Returning to New York City, he earned a master's degree in library science from Columbia University in 1964 and began working in the New York Public Library while continuing to develop his interest in writing. In 1970, Avi took
