    Introduction

Leiningen Versus the Ants is a short story by the twentieth-century German writer Carl Stephenson. It was first published in English in Esquire in December 1938 and has been reprinted many times since in short story anthologies. It is one of the most popular adventure stories ever written. It can be found in Great Stories of Suspense and Adventure, edited by Beth Johnson and Barbara Solot and published by Townsend Press in 2003; Twenty-One Great Stories, edited by Abraham H. Lass and Norma L. Tasman (Signet, 1969); Classic Adventure Stories: Twenty-one Tales of People Pushed to the Limit, edited by Stephen Vincent Brennan (Lyons Press, 2004), and Fictional Ants, published by Books LLC in 2010.

Leiningen Versus the Ants is an adventure story set on a large plantation in Brazil. The protagonist, Leiningen, is a German settler who learns that his plantation is threatened by an advancing army of millions of ants. The ant army stretches for ten miles and is two miles wide. The ants will destroy the plantation and kill Leiningen and all his men unless he can figure out a way to stop them. The story is a classic of its kind; the protagonist must battle the forces of nature in order to survive.
