    Introduction

    in Just was originally published in the Dial in 1920, along with several other poems by e. e. cummings. The poem was later included in the author's 1923 collection Tulips and Chimneys. The poem can easily be found in various online sources. It also appears in a number of print sources such as the 1994 Liveright volume, E. E. Cummings: Complete Poems 1904–1962.

    in Just is the first of three poems in Tulips and Chimneys to fall under the title Chansons Innocentes, which means songs of innocence and it concentrates on the joys of childhood and spring. Like many other modern poems, in Just is written in free verse. It shows the author's flair for using unusual typography to make artistic statements. in Just is one of cummings's most beloved poems and offers a glimpse into his own childhood.

    Author Biography

    e. e. cummings was born Edward Estlin Cummings on October 14, 1894, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His father was a Harvard professor of sociology and political science who became a Unitarian minister when his son was six. cummings began writing and painting at a young age, and he continued these passions throughout his life.

    From 1911 to 1916, cummings attended Harvard University, where he was introduced to the work of Ezra Pound and other modern poets. His poetry was featured in the Harvard Poet Society's publication Eight Harvard Poets in 1916. He joined the French ambulance service the next year to assist the Allies in World War I. The French were suspicious of cummings and other foreign volunteers, and cummings was detained after he and his friend William Taylor Brown wrote letters that were considered incriminating.
