INTRODUCTION
Graham Greene's novel The Power and the Glory concerns a Catholic priest's struggle for survival in postrevolutionary Mexico, where priests are marked for death. This whiskey priest
has not been a good clergyman, but his trip through the jungle, to another state where the laws against religious worship are less strict, is blocked at every turn by devout people who have not seen a priest in years and beg for his attention.
The idea of this novel came when Greene traveled through southern Mexico, in Tabasco and other states that provided the framework for the story. Greene, a devout Catholic, was appalled by the Mexican laws suppressing religious worship. The story came into shape when he heard a tale about
