Father and I
Paär Lagerkvist
1924
Introduction
Swedish author Pa¨ r (Peter) Lagerkvist earned a reputation as one of the preeminent Swedish writers of the twentieth century, having written prolifically in a variety of genres, including short stories, novels, and poetry. His short story Father and I
was originally published in 1924 in Swedish as Far och jag.
It was translated into English by Alan Blair and published in the 1954 collection of Lagerkvist's short stories The Marriage Feast. The work exemplifies Lagerkvist's simple, precise style. Centered on a walk through the woods shared between father and son, the story, which is told from the nine-yearold child's point of view, begins on a Sunday afternoon and is initially light and carefree in tone. As the sun sets and the sky begins to darken, so does the story's tone. The child begins to grow fearful, and he is terrified to discover that he is not reassured by his father's attempt to comfort him. The father places his trust in God, yet the son finds only a heightened sense of panic when considering God's omnipresence. Lagerkvist offers no resolution at the story's conclusion; the work ends with the child fearing a lifetime of darkness and uncertainty. While the father-son relationship is at the heart of the story, the reference to God infuses the story with religious significance, and the child's fear and distrust take on deeper meaning than if he had simply questioned his father and his beliefs. Light and darkness also take on symbolic import when regarded within the context of the story's spiritual themes.
