    Introduction

Tribes is an award-winning play composed by noted British playwright Nina Raine for the English Stage Company. It was first performed in October 2010 at London's Royal Court Theatre and has since become a stage favorite across the English-speaking world. An intimate, emotionally nuanced play, Tribes engages with the dynamics of the modern family and the profound social alienation experienced by the deaf. It is at once a compelling drama and a romance, examining a wide array of mental, emotional, and physical handicaps through the lens of a loving, albeit discordant, family. The play poses essential questions about the impact of communication upon character and about the value of expression, in all its myriad forms, in healing estrangement and nurturing human connection. Tribes offers an unflinching, ultimately optimistic commentary on the social stigmas that divide people, and on the common humanity, too often overlooked, that brings people together.
