      Introduction

      Based on John Guare's screen adaptation of his own Pulitzer Prize–nominated play (1990) and directed by Fred Schepisi, Six Degrees of Separation recounts the story of an affluent New York couple, Flan and Ouisa Kittredge (Donald Sutherland and Stockard Channing, respectively) whose lives are infiltrated by a young black man (Will Smith) who is never what he appears to be. As the couple set out on a search to uncover the truth behind the lies, their own lives are laid bare to new levels of self-examination.

      The original Broadway production of Six Degrees of Separation opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theater on November 8, 1990, ran for 485 performances, and was nominated for the 1991 Tony Award for Best Play. Released on December 8, 1993, and filmed for an estimated budget of twelve million dollars, the screen adaptation is rated R for language and sexual content, specifically scenes of male frontal nudity and men kissing. There are numerous instances of expletives throughout.

      Plot Summary

      The Film Opens With The Sound Of Upbeat Symphony Music As Colors Fade In And Out Of The Screen, Suggesting A Painting Of Some Sort. The Scene Transitions To A Dusk Long Shot Of Central Park In New York City, With The Skyline Of Manhattan Featured Prominently. The Camera Pans To Reveal The Interior Of A Very Lavish Apartment Overlooking The Park. Finely Decorated, The Apartment Is Full Of Works Of Art Of Various Types.

      FILM TECHNIQUE

      A flashback is a scene or series of scenes inserted into the present time of the film in order to deal with events that have happened in the past (the past tense) of the film. The first forty minutes of Six Degrees of Separation essentially make up an extended flashback, with the Kittredges sitting in a country wedding reception recounting the events of the previous evening, when Paul infiltrated their dinner with Geoffrey. While this extended flashback is crucial to creating the backstory of Paul's introduction to this social circle, it also draws attention to the constructedness of the stories that accumulate as the film progresses.

      The film underscores the interconnectedness of stories and characters as well as the claustrophobic nature of Manhattan social circles through the use of aggressive intercuts, which bring together scenes from various locations in such a way that the story appears to progress in a linear fashion even though the various moments are separated across time and place. Time and space are compressed, giving the impression that all parts of the story overlay numerous lives as a unique but
