Beauty
Jane Martin
2001
Introduction
No one knows who Jane Martin really is. Various profiles about her indicate that she is from Kentucky and list the many plays she has written but give no other personal information. She has never accepted any of her awards in person. She has never attended the opening of one her plays, nor met with the directors or actors. No one is even certain that she is indeed a she.
The name is a pseudonym—a fake name adopted by a writer who prefers to keep his or her identity a secret. Speculation about who the author might be and the reasons for the secrecy is widespread in the theater world.
Martin's early plays deal mostly with feminist issues, but her later works expand to address other social issues, ranging from child abuse to satire about the theater world. Her play Beauty deals with the theme of jealousy and explores the idea of what beauty really is, as well as how people search for happiness. Beauty is available in Jane Martin: Collected Plays, Vol. 2, 1996–2001 (2001).
Author Biography
The only straightforward fact that has ever been revealed about Martin is that she is from Kentucky. Jon Jory, who has produced most of Martin's plays and who acts as a kind of spokesman on her behalf, explained in a press release cited on the Hartnell College website that Whoever writes these plays feels that they would be unable to write them if [their identity] was made public knowledge.
There are stories about Martin, though they seem to be more rumor than truth, including about how her first play, Twirler, was produced. It is said that Martin put a copy of the play under Jory's door at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. It is also said that there was a contest, for which Twirler was an entry. Whatever the circumstances, Twirler was staged in 1981 as part of the Humana Festival of New American Plays, an important and prestigious regional theater event founded and managed by Jory. The
