    Introduction

Amy Herzog's play 4000 Miles centers around Leo, a young man who has just completed a cross-country trip on his bike, and his grandmother Vera, with whom he stays at the end of his journey. As the play unfolds, the audience learns that Leo's best friend died during the course of the trip. In New York in his grandmother's apartment, Leo begins to cope not only with the death of his friend, but with family issues as well. Vera offers unconditional love and straightforward—and often unsolicited—advice to Leo, whose choices have hurt his former girlfriend, as well as his sister. Ultimately, Leo finds a way to move forward. Herzog treats such themes as grief and healing, along with the notions of family and identity, in 4000 Miles. It was originally staged in 2011 and published in 2012. It was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 2013.

    Author Biography

Herzog was born in 1979 in Highland Park, New Jersey. She attended Yale University as an undergraduate and then the Yale School of Drama, graduating with a master of fine arts degree. For a time, Herzog pursued acting before turning to playwriting. She has taught playwriting at Yale University and creative writing at Bryn Mawr College. Her first full-length play was 2010's After the Revolution. In it, Herzog explores her family history, particularly the challenges her family members faced when in 1999 it was revealed that her step-grandfather had provided government secrets to the Soviets during World War II. For 4000 Miles, she won the 2012 Obie Award for Best New American Play. In this play, she draws on some of the same family history she explored in After the Revolution. Herzog is married to director Sam Gold; they have one daughter.
