Exile
Julia Alvarez
1995
Introduction
Although best known as a novelist, Julia Alvarez has also earned a reputation as a gifted poet. Her third collection of poetry was 1995's The Other Side/El Otro Lado, in which Exile
appears. The poem tells the autobiographical story of the night Alvarez and her family fled the Dominican Republic to the safety of America. The poem tells nothing of the political reasons for the exile, instead focusing on what the experience looked and felt like to the ten-year-old narrator.
The central event of Exile has been described by Alvarez as the most traumatic experience of her life, but the poem has a calm, measured feel. The poet captures the voice of a young girl who is confused, finding comfort in her nai¨ve assumptions that being with her parents ensures her security. The family makes it safely to New York City to begin a new life, and the end of the poem points strongly to the struggles of identity and assimilation to come. Written in free verse and employing occasional wordplay, the poem relies heavily on a swim motif as it conveys themes of security and escape.
Author Biography
Alvarez was born on March 27, 1950, in New York City. When she was only a few months old, her parents decided to return to their native Dominican Republic to raise their family. The Alvarez family remained there for ten years before fleeing back to America. Alvarez's father, a physician, was active in an underground political group, and for years, he and his family had been spared by leveraging the influence and prestige of his wife's prominent family. All of that came to an end when his role in a planned assassination against dictator Rafael Trujillo was discovered. To save himself and his family, Dr. Alvarez took his family and fled to the safety of America. Four months later, the Mirabel sisters, who had established the rebel group,
