Domestic Violence
Eavan Boland
2007
Introduction
Domestic Violence
is a poem by the distinguished Irish poet Eavan Boland. Published as the title poem in Boland's collection Domestic Violence in 2007, it is one of many poems in the collection that combine personal reflections with observations and questions about the sectarian violence that began in the British province of Northern Ireland in 1969 and continued for thirty years.
In this poem, the poet looks back on the beginning of the Troubles, as the conflict was known in Northern Ireland, and considers the question of the relationship between public and private worlds. She was living near Dublin, Ireland, at the time, which was not directly affected by the violence, so she witnessed the Troubles not as a participant but on the television news. She had just married and was raising two daughters during the 1970s. Was she then unconnected to the violence that broke out in the northern part of the island? Or is everyone somehow involved in what happens in or near their country, even though their own personal lives seem to have no connection to it? As a reflective poem that considers the interwoven fabric of domestic life and Irish history, Domestic Violence
serves as an introduction to some of the themes that have repeatedly occupied Boland during her career.
