    Introduction

Rabbit Hole, a play by David Lindsay-Abaire, explores the dark topic of a couple struggling with the accidental death of their only child. Known for his humorous work, Lindsay-Abaire was challenged by a mentor to write about a subject that scared him. The result is a delicate and intimate look into the lives of Becca and Howie as they navigate the unknown waters of grief in a play where the simplest memories and smallest items unleash the strongest emotions. Lindsay-Abaire's hyperrealistic dialogue combines with profound moments of silence to create a play quiet in volume but thunderous in meaning.

Rabbit Hole was commissioned by the South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California, and premiered on Broadway in 2006, receiving Tony nominations for Best Play, Best Direction of a Play, Best Scenic Design of a Play, and Best Featured Actress in a Play. Cynthia Nixon won the 2006 Τony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Becca. In 2007, Lindsay-Abaire won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Rabbit Hole, despite the fact that the play was not actually nominated for the award. Rabbit Hole was made available in print in 2006.

    Author Biography

Lindsay-Abaire was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 30, 1969. Growing up in the neighborhood of South Boston, Lindsay-Abaire developed the eclectic sense of humor for which his work is known. In an interview with the Huntington Theatre Company he explained: "My sense of humor is very Southie—dark and inappropriate. Laughter in the face of hardship." In the seventh grade he received a scholarship to Milton Academy in the suburbs of Boston. Traveling by train between his workingclass neighborhood and the affluent private school, Lindsay-Abaire lost his Boston accent but not his rich sense of humor or his love for his hometown. He attended Sarah Lawrence College, where he studied theater, graduating in 1992. In 1996 he was accepted into the Juilliard School as a member of the Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program.

His plays include FuddyMeers, Kimberly Akimbo, Wonder of the World, A Devil Inside, and Good People. Marsha Norman, a former teacher at Juilliard, encouraged Lindsay-Abaire to write a play about a frightening, personal subject. As a father of a young son, Lindsay-Abaire chose the death of a young child for Rabbit Hole, an atypically somber play that is, however, not lacking in humor. Rabbit Hole was nominated for five Tony Awards in
