    A Strange Odyssey - Rajalaxmi K Iyer

    publisher.

    Prologue

I was sleeping and woke up hearing a voice. The voice said,You have to come with me.

I couldn’t see any body . It was pitch dark. As I looked on, a diffused light spread in the room. In that light I could see silhouette of a figure which was not very clear.Where do I have to come? I asked. Again I heard the voice You are not supposed to ask questions. Now I saw another silhouette behind the first. Another voice said,Yes. You have to go before I leave your house.

I sat up on the bed. There was nothing in the room. No silhouette, no light. I switched on the light. My husband was snoring on the bed. I realized that it was all a dream. I laughed recalling the crazy dream I had just now.I looked at the clock. It was 5:30 in the morning. Almost my usual waking time. I went about my usual household work hurriedly as I had to leave for my work place by 8: 30. I was the academic adviser for a school . I was the principal of the same school before retirement. The school had also given me the

assignment of writing activity books for students in all subjects. I must confess that the dream haunted me in between my work. It was really a strange dream. I did not tell about it to any one for fear of being laughed at.

According to Sigmund Freud ,human mind has three levels of consciousness- conscious, subconscious and unconscious. We are normally unaware of the feelings and memories stored in the subconscious and unconscious mind. Sometimes in sleep the memories buried in the subconscious mind will come up to the conscious level. This is called dream. Deep rooted desires, fears, bitter or pleasant experiences and the like will materialise as dreams. The dream which I had might also be some crazy ideas of mine embedded in the subconscious mind. I consoled myself saying so. Eventually I forgot about the dream.

    Adventure 1

It was the month of August and the year was 2012. One day I was in an animated discussion with the teachers. I was talking excitedly. Suddenly my nose started bleeding. I pressed my kerchief against the nose. A few teachers helped me to the lift. Soon I found myself in the sick room of the school.By this time the kerchief was soaked in blood. Sickroom incharge Mr. Philipose made me lie on the bed and the nurse cleaned my nose and brought the BP machine for checking the BP. As he was pumping the rubber bladder, I stretched my neck to see the reading. Mr. Philipose skillfully turned the apparatus to a side so that I could not see the mercury level.

Are you taking your BP tablet regularly? he asked. It then occurred to me that for two days continuously I was not taking the pills. When I confessed this, he arranged to get the Pills of the brand I was using. By this time the Principal also came there. It was decided to take me to the nearest clinic as an emergency measure.Bleeding had stopped and I said there was no need to go to the clinic because I preferred to discuss with our doctor friend first..But no one would listen to me. My car was summoned. Mr. Philipose also came with me to the nearby clinic..

On the way I asked,How high is my BP?

He said hesitantly,Actually I didn’t want to disclose it because I didn’t want to scare you. The systolic was 212 and diastolic 130

What does it signify? I asked.

The situation is serious. Any way we are going to see the doctor. He will tell you everything.. Nothing to worry.

I am not worried about anything. I am not worried about death if that is what you mean. But I want to settle a few things before I leave this world." I said with a chuckle.

He also laughed. You are imagining too much, madam, A high Bp doesn’t mean anything that serious.

At the clinic the doctor checked the BP and gave a few pills. He asked me to wait for half an hour. After half an hour again checked the BP.It was normal. He prescribed a new brand of BP tablets to be taken regularly.

I phoned to my husband and informed him what happened. He suggested that I meet our doctor friend Dr, Gangadhar on my way home .I didn’t go back to school. On my way home I met the doctor.and briefed him what happened. "Was the bleeding due to high BP?’ I asked him.

Can’t say. You better consult a neurologist and cardiologist.

‘Your nose saved you." said neurologist Dr. Srinivas Malya.I looked at him questioningly.

If your nose didn’t bleed, it would have resulted in a brain hemorrhage.

What exactly is the reason for the bleeding? Is it high BP or anything else?

It is due to high BP. So don’t forget to take your daily dose of pills. It is better to consult a cardiologist also as a precautionary measure." he said.

As it was the winding up time and I was the last patient, we had time to chat a little. I knew him because I had been to him once before regarding my husband’s ailment. It was he who saved my husband by detecting a brain hemorrhage and got him operated, sometime back.

Are you related to Vijay Malya?" I asked him.

Only our surnames are same. There is no other connection between us. he laughed.

The cardiologist wanted X -ray of the chest , blood test and eye tests done. After going through the reports he said everything was normal. He also insisted that I take BP medicines regularly.

That was the end of the adventure and things started moving in the routine way. I was back to work and was back to normal routine.

One sunday I made my routine phone call to my mother who was staying with my brother in Kerala. After the casual enquiries about the health and well being of family members, she mentionedday after tomorrow is your birthday. I have given for an archana in the Krishna temple. You are completing 65 years this Krithika.

The rest of what she said did not enter my ears. The term ‘65 years sent shock waves through my veins. It brought back to my memory something I read long ago in
