A Study Guide for Janet Fitch’s White Oleander

    Janet Fitch

    1999

    Introduction

White Oleander is Janet Fitch's best-selling debut novel. Published in 1999 by Little, Brown, it became part of Oprah's Book Club and was adapted into a movie in 2002. This dark, coming-of-age novel explores motherhood and mother-daughter relationships. Throughout the tragedy of the novel, Fitch examines the theme of beauty and shows how it can be found where people least expect it. The author's poetic language and compelling descriptions reflect this beauty.

When Astrid's mother, Ingrid, murders the man who left her, Astrid tries to discover herself, but she is continually pulled by her mother's influence and the influence of different foster families. Astrid is forced to navigate her relationship with her mother as well as the perils of the foster-care system while she forges her own identity as a woman and an artist.

    Author Biography

Fitch was born on November 9, 1955, in Los Angeles, California. A lifelong reader, Fitch developed an early love of Russian literature. She chose history as her major and graduated from Reed College with a bachelor's degree in 1978. She then went to Keele University in England to further her studies in Russian literature. It was there, when she turned twenty-one, that she decided to become an author.

Fitch worked as a typesetter and freelance journalist while attempting to develop her career as an author. Her young-adult novel Kicks was published in 1996. White Oleander, however, launched her success. A short story that would become the novel was published in Black Warrior Review and was chosen as a distinguished story in the 1994 Best American Short Stories. According to Fitch, Joyce Carol Oates rejected the story for publication but suggested that Fitch make it into a novel. White Oleander became a best seller and was selected for the Oprah Book Club with its publication in 1999. The novel was quickly adapted into a film, released in 2002. Fitch published her next novel, Paint It Black, in 2006. A historical fiction novel, The Revolution of Marina M., took time to research and complete and was published in 2017. Along with her novels, Fitch has crafted short stories and articles and contributed to anthologies.

    Media Adaptations

The film version of White Oleander was made in 2002. The movie stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Alison Lohman and runs one hour and fifty minutes.
