Introduction
Guadalupe Garcia McCall's young-adult novel Under the Mesquite (2011) focuses on a Mexican American family in Texas during the 1970s that undergoes a crisis as the mother succumbs to ovarian cancer, an experience drawn from the author's own life. The young narrator, Lupita, is the eldest daughter; she must take her mother's place in charge of her seven brothers and sisters. The treatment is notable for immersing the reader in the mixed immigrant culture of the US-Mexican border without contrasting its characters' world with mass American culture. Although the form is decidedly a novel, it is written in free verse, concentrating on figurative language and the emotional intensity of Lupita's feelings and reactions.
Author Biography
Garcia (later McCall) was born on November 13, 1965, in Piedras Negras, a village in the state of Coahuila, Mexico. Her own account of her life suggests that it largely parallels that of Lupita (who also shares the author's name) in Under the Mesquite. Her family, including many siblings, moved to the United States when she was six years old and settled in Eagle Pass, Texas (El Águila in Spanish), a town immediately across the Rio Grande from Piedras Negras. Her mother died of cancer while McCall was in high school. Her parents were poor and had very little education, and they, like many immigrants, stressed the education of their children as the key to fulfilling the American dream. When McCall was just in grade school, her teachers already recognized potential as a writer and encouraged it. She attended Sul Ross State University, where she met her husband, James McCall, and took degrees in theater arts and education. For many years she worked as a high school English teacher and drama coach in Somerset, Texas, outside San Antonio. She has three sons, James, Steven, and Jason.
Her life at this time was a typical American suburban existence, revolving around her sons' sports teams and trips to amusement parks. She read widely, especially Latin American authors, and she cites Gabriel García Márquez as a particular favorite and influence. She began publishing young-adult poetry in the Poetry Friday series, publications intended for high-school and middle-school circulation, and other specialized literary journals
