A Presentation by Dr.

Eric Johnson
Associate Professor, WSU Tri-Cities
Public schools play a significant role in our local communities. Dr. Johnson will present the unique cultural and linguistic features of the Columbia Basin region that has provided local educators with multiple opportunities to develop a range of strategies to meet the needs of their students. By unpacking the inherent complexities involved in concepts like language, culture, and education, this discussion aims to shed light on the ways in which teachers, students, and families from diverse backgrounds have confronted challenges set forth by state and federal education policies. On a broader scale, themes surrounding immigration and language policy will be illustrated in terms of educational trends in varying political contexts, drawing from specific examples in Arizona and Washington.

Dr. Eric Johnsons research focus is on ethnographic approaches to language-minority education programs and language policies in public schools. His interests include language policy and planning, the application of policy as practice, immigrant communities, and bilingual education.
