To maintain its air of exclusivity, Behar says that the Fever Collection is only available to independent U.S. retailers, not mass markets. Theres a European twist to all of the costumes that gives it a unique flavor, Behar said. The British just have their own quirky, different spin thats evident throughout the entire line. According to Behar, the bestselling costumes of 2012 werent based on any distinct themes. We had several single homerun hits like the mermaid, lam catsuits and our evil Cirque de Soleil outfit. Shannon, the head stylist and buyer for Miamibased retailer Playthings, says that this year, the best-selling costumes consisted of superheroes and warriors, including caveman, Spartan and medieval looks. Because of the multiple box office releases superheroes are in high demand, she said. Another style trend on the horizon is Japanese street fashion. I am starting to see the Harajuku scene, an eclectic blend of loud colors and crazy accessories making its debut here in the states, Shannon said. The Harajukus gather once a week to show off their amazing costumes and outfits, its huge culturally and its a fun way to be an amplified version of yourself. It should do well here. Also some of our celebrities and their daring fashion, have allowed customers to step away from the safe zone and really go over the top with their costumes. While high-end luxury and romance typically drive holiday sales, will shoppers lean towards being more naughty than nice this year? The legs on the Fifty Shades craze has gone longer than I imagined, said Daniel Friedman, CEO of Canadian adult novelty and lingerie distributor Pink Cherry. Its a complete anomaly in our industry, topping even the Sex & the City rabbit craze. U.S. distributor Komar Companys Mark Foreman agrees that as the Fifty Shades franchise grows, so will the sales for related products. When a book sets a record for the fastestselling paperback of all-time coupled with a movie and two additional volumes, were confident BDSM products related to the book will sustain, Foreman said. These stores, because of their inability to adapt to changing trends in retail and expand their thought processes, are often the ones who are experiencing the most stress in their businesses. The second category is the constant re-inventor. A store that brings in whatever appeals to them personally, often ignoring the needs or desires of the customers who are in their area, and who often find themselves frustrated saying nothing is moving and I am trying everything. This retailer is taking risks but not spending the time to do the most important aspect of selling in their stores educating the consumer. The third and final category is the successful store. They have figured out what their core items are and have found a happy balance in the influx of new items coming into their stores. James Keaton, Longtime Member of Lions Den Family, Dies


ames Lowell Keaton, 67, retiree of the Lions Den, passed away after battling complications from diabetes. Jim was a key executive of the Lions Den prior to his retirement in January 2011 and a great friend to the Moran family. Born in Middletown, Ohio, to Roger and Wilma Keaton, Jim is survived by his life partner Jack Ryan, his brother, John, and sister-in-law, Anita, as well as nieces and nephews and many friends. Jim started with the company in October 1976 following a tour with the U.S. Air Force and soon became the right-hand man of Lions Den founder Mike Moran. By 1980 Jim was heading up the operations department and was

involved in locating and opening more than 20 Lions Den locations during his tenure. Jim also managed EP&W (Excellent Pictures & Words), the company warehouse, and moved it from Miami to its current location in Columbus. Jim was a real character, and we wanted to include some of the fondest and funniest memories that Lions Den staff have of him: On one of his many beloved trips to Vegas, Jim, Jack, and Kenny; the Three Amigos; along with Mike Mucci were walking down the strip to their hotel. Jim looked up towards his room window and said, Oh, you can see through them windows, I have been standing in front of them naked all week. Ron Corey, current member of the EP&W team who was hired and mentored by Jim, tells us Jim made the best fried chicken and loved to

collect CocaCola memorabilia. Jim also loved the cookouts that we have occasionally at the office particularly the bratwurst. Phil Bunfill, manager of the eastern Ohio store, remembers Jim as a fierce protector of the Moran family as Jim would never allow anyone to talk badly of them lest a shoe get stuck where the sun dont shine. Bob Ferrell, manager of one of the WV locations says, When Jim showed up here, someone was getting fired and when he spoke, everyone listened. Jim always made me smile. Jack Ryan spoke of a time when our beloved security tech, Woody, walked into the office and walked up

to Jim and depanted him. Per Jack, This is one of the few times I remember Jim being speechless. Kenny Crosby, Lions Dens very first employee, stated, There was never a better friend than Jim ... he always had your back. Jim was known for his love of all Lions Den employees, and he had a signature sign off as famous here as Ed Sullivans Really Big Show, Carol Burnetts tug on her ear and Gomer Pyles Golly. Jim simply stood, bent over and kissed the top of your head, every time. So, Jim, heres to you XOXO a kiss from your beloved Lions Den. We will miss you old friend.
