sixth grade class has recently been working on identifying similes and metaphors and employing them in their writing. Although the students seem to be proficient in identifying and utilizing smilies, we noticed that many of them seem to be struggling with creating their own metaphors and using them in their written work. Therefore, we have decided to have the students focus on creating metaphors with a goal of being able to explain their metaphors to demonstrate understanding of how to use the figure of speech. We believe that its important to emphasize the practicality and common usage of metaphors and decided to start off our lesson with the analysis of the lyrics to the song Stereo Hearts by Maroon 5. (See attached worksheet). We chose this song to show them a relevant example of the use of metaphors in the real world, and we believe the students will be familiar with it1. After discussing the use of metaphors in the song, we will transition to creating our own metaphors. Using a guiding prompt (____ is a ____), we will model our own metaphors for the students and then use a word bank to create and discuss metaphors using the prompt. The culmination of the lesson will be students creatively crafting their own sentences using metaphors and explaining how their comparisons make sense. Throughout this lesson we will utilize guided group work, discussion, and individual writing. We will employ careful scaffolding to ensure that students first become familiar with the content-- metaphors-- and then as the lesson elapses, practice using metaphors in their own written work.

Lesson Plan Template Goals / Objectives Students will be able to: Identify and interpret metaphors in a text passage Create their own metaphors Explain the meaning of their created metaphors. Standards (and Assessment Anchors, if applicable) Interpret the effect of various literary devices (e.g., personification, simile, alliteration, symbolism, metaphor, and imagery) 1.3.6.D. Materials and preparation Literacy notebooks, pen/pencils. 14 Copies of stereo hearts lyrics Laptop, with song-- stereo hearts-- queued up.

hopefully we are still in tune with what the kids think is cool

Classroom arrangement and management issues Its unclear, at this point, what classroom space we will have available to us, but our options will be room 307, 304, the library, or our last resort would be the hallway outside of our classroom. In terms of potential issues, the hallway tends to be most difficult as students from outside of our class can be potentially distracting, but its important that we keep the students engaged and participating within the small group. Plan 1

Introduction - Have students identify, interpret, and discuss metaphors using the lyrics to Maroon 5 - Stereo Hearts (see attached) (15 min) a give students copies of the lyrics when they walk in - 5 min to identify a metaphor, underline it, and write down the interpretation b have students share & discuss the metaphors (10 min) i What is being compared? ii How are those two things similar? iii If you just read my heart is a stereo, would you know what the author meant by that? iv How is the meaning of the metaphor explained? 1 You cant just compare two random things/items. v How would it be different if the writer had just said _[the meaning]_ instead of using the metaphor? c make sure they correctly identify and interpret the metaphors i comparing his heart to a stereo (using comparison to show how everything he does is for the girl he loves) ii comparing himself to a dusty record iii comparing holding grudges to ancient artifacts (outdated) iv bonus - simile: keep myself inside your head like your favorite tune d ask if they recognize the lyrics - play the first part of the song (first minute) i timing for this flexible, if the students recognize it right away, play it for them earlier Tell them were going to create our own metaphors today (10 min) a using format: _____ is a ______ (write format on board) i refer back to the warm-up my heart is a stereo ii Life is a rollercoaster iii School is a game b brainstorm more metaphors together (discuss as a group) i give choices: life, love, family, school, recess, etc. ii have them raise their hands, make a comparison & explain their choice 1 How is _____ like ______? 2 keep going through examples Have them create their own metaphors and write at least one-two more sentence to describe it (15 min) a model: School is a game. Once you figure out the rules, you can figure out how to succeed. b can use a metaphor we came up with as a group or create a new one

let them know we will be sharing them after give them 10 minutes to work independently have them write it on the back of their worksheet with the lyrics i start off having them create one have them do more if they finish quickly ii collect worksheets for assessment at the end Assessment of the goals/objectives listed above Our assessment of the students will come from the work that they produced throughout the lesson. Our main assessment will be the collection and evaluation of their own metaphors that they created at the end of the lesson. This will inform us whether the students were able to create their own metaphors. Anticipating students responses and your possible responses For the final portion of the lesson, if students finish their work early, they can go ahead and create another sentence using metaphors. Another option would be to have the students share their responses with students who are struggling to come up with ideas or produce metaphors. We have a pretty solid grasp of where the students are in terms of this content area as weve been working with similes and metaphors for the past few days. Accommodations As noted in the previous section, if a student is having trouble with the content or material, we can always pair them up with a student who shows that they have a solid grasp on the concepts. With metaphors in particular, weve noticed that when students see or hear an example, they usually are able to then come up with something on their own. If needed, for the final portion of the lesson, we can give the student a word bank or prompt that can guide them as well.

Maroon 5 - Stereo Hearts (chorus) My Heart's a stereo It beats for you so listen close Hear my thoughts in every note Make me your radio And turn me up when you feel low This melody was meant for you Just sing along to my stereo If I was just another dusty record on the shelf Would you blow me off and play me like everybody else If I asked you to scratch my back, could you manage that Like if read well, check it Travie, I can handle that Furthermore I apologize for any skipping tracks 'Cause just the last girl that played me left a couple cracks I used to, used to, used to used to now I'm over that 'Cause holding grudges over love is ancient artifacts If I could only find a note to make you understand I'd sing it softly in your ear and grab you by the hands Keep myself inside your head like your favorite tune You know my heart's a stereo that only plays for you
