The Dust Bowl and The Okies

Who were the Okies?


People who migrated from Oklahoma were called Okies Okies were usually white migrating farmers. Okie is a short term for Oklahoma Okies got their name in the 1930s during the migrations.

What is the dust bowl?


The dust bowl was a region subjected to dust storms; especially in the central region of the U.S during the 1930s.

The Dust Bowl: When did it happen? How was it created?

The Dust Bowl happened in the decade of 1931-1939. The soil began to dry and loosen. The farmers took over the grasslands and planted wheat over the dry soil. Then wind came and carried up all the dust, creating the dust storms.

Where was the dust bowl?


The dust bowl occurred in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, and Wyoming.

How were the Okies affected by the dust bowl


Okies were affected by the dust bowl because the drought damaged wheat, crops were cut off at ground level or torn from their roots, cattle died from eating the dust and people got dust pneumonia and other people died from inhaling the dust.
