There is a certain justice to giving the task for discovering the silent forms of control to those whose primary mode of operation is enormous volume. The trajectory from loud rock music to even louder industrial music (Boyd Rice/Non plays too loud even for much of the stupid club scene) to experiments in subliminal sound is continuous. There is, in a certain sense, no difference, no line between sound so loud it is all one can hear and sound so deep and pervasive it cannot be heard at all. Loud is critical. Or perhaps we should put the same matter differently: if we have taken critical to imply a certain distance, a certain non-identity with the object, loud proceeds, as the stupid underground always proceeds, in the opposite direction. Rock music, after all nothing more than the prattle of a banal hybridization of capital and adolescent (male) fantasy, becomes, in intensity, at the most extreme volume, the stupid reduction of that constructed reality, the limit of its tolerability. Critical then not through distance but, as we have seen, through proximity, through what would appear to be the most uncritical embrace. Here again Zizek is helpful: "Although functioning as a support for the totalitarian order,

fantasy is then at the same time the leftover of the real that enables us to 'pull ourselves out,' to preserve a kind of distance from the socio-symbolic network. When we become crazed in our obsession with idiotic enjoyment, even totalitarian manipulation cannot reach us" (128). Zizek's example here is precisely popular music, the inane ditty that anchors the fantasy,
that runs endlessly in one's head; what one wishes to add here is the criterion of force, of intensity, of sound so loud that, even though it is a cultural product from top to bottom, it nonetheless enfolds the audience and isolates it within the symbolic order. The intensity of loud drowns out the Other. It is the limit of the symbolic, its null point, experienced in the very onslaught of its signs. Perhaps we could appropriate a Lacanian term for this fantastic volume that goes beyond fantasy: the sinthome. Zizek calls it "subversive," but that, unfortunately, is to offer it to those who wannabe subversive, to see themselves seen as subversives, to be (to fantasize being) political agents in an older and ever more current sense.26 Let us nonetheless pursue the concept for a moment. Zizek: [T]he signifier permeated with idiotic enjoyment is what Lacan, in the last stage of his teaching, called le sinthome. Le sinthome is not the symptom, the coded message to be deciphered by interpretation, but the meaningless letter that immediately procures jouis-sense,"enjoyment-in-meaning," "enjoy-meant.". . . During Simone's recuperation her fascination with eyes intensifies. No longer able to participate in any sexual activity, she and the I who focuses the text(17) play with eggs in a manner which mimics a metonymic substitution of images. "She soon delighted in having me throw eggs into the

toilet bowl, hard-boiled eggs, which sank, and shells sucked out in various degrees to obtain varying levels of immersion"(36). Sometimes she would urinate on them. Physically confined, Simone continues the violation of fixed images, while the images themselves proliferate and the possibilities of incommensurate connections explode. Eyes in the toilets, hard-boiled eggs, partially sucked eggs, all objectify imagery that is fixed. Simone's play with eggs gradually increases the force of its transgressive nature.The mother's entrance into the room advances the play to the edge of its own limits; instead of disrupting their activity, her presence intensifies their pleasure. In order for their behavior to be have impact, there must be a prohibition against it. The play must occur within the system so that the system itself can release its own non-meaning.
"Play," Bataille notes, "is nothing if not an open and unreserved challenge to everything opposed to play" (quoted by Derrida 378n40). Simone's play with the egg prefigures the Derridean concept of play, an activity of the difference that results from the appropriating action of classification systems such as language or numismatics. Bataille's play executes the non-meaning in the appropriative movement that creates meaning--being an activity of that which is not retained in the substitutive movement of metaphor. To return to the system of coinness, Bataille's play with the egg and the eye and the testicles---a seemingly random contiguity of images privileging surfaces in this text which classifies eyeness--calls attention to a system that contains objects detached from their totality of meaning. The coin collected as coin no longer in currency is a coin detached from its use-value. Play is the activity of the use-value,the presence of the bank draft. A reading or writing of the text is an action of expenditure without reserve-pure potlatch. The images are put into play by the urination which figurates the fissure or rupture needed to unlock the contained optical simulacrum and to unleash the violent discharges of the pineal eye: "Upon my asking [Simone] what the word urinate reminded her of, she replied: terminate, the eyes, with a razor, something red, the sun" (38). In The Story of the Eye the "eye" of the anus or genital orifice, the description of which always foregrounds the raw and fleshy aspects, becomes the rupturing gaze, and its most gruesome portrayal is the bullfighting scene when the eye of Granero, the matador, is gouged out by the bull. The final scene in the church of Don Juan, however, depicts the most virulent transgression of The Story of the Eye. If the text is God relieving Himself, then these final scenes can be read as God voiding His own Absoluteness, a gesture reified in the urination of the priest into the ciborium containing the communion wafers which are an embodiment of the absent Christ, himself an embodiment of the absent Absolute. Since the ritual of the Mass includes the expression "the Word is God." The action of urination here is then the transgressing of the system of Christian religion that grounds the systems of knowledge in Western culture, that is, the systems through which we know our world and which enable us to live within it. But as urinating is the passing and the making, this transgressive action expendsin order that the system can continue to make. In Simone's intercourse with the dying priest, she attempts to capture the totality of the experience of life which can only be gained by dying. Her action takes place at the limit of life, as this last transgressive scene takes place at the limit of the prohibition---the violation of the most sacred. Transgression must occur within the system or it would not be a transgression, as Bataille seeks to embrace the non-meaning of the bank draft within the system because to go outside the system would be to be outside the totality of coinness and to render the non-meaning meaningless. For a human to die is to experience the totality of what it means to live, but to die is to move beyond expression. Bataille needs always to be at the limit while including a gesture toward the non-being on the other side. Bataille writes at the conclusion of his essay on "The Notion of Expenditure" that "the states of excitation, which are comparable to toxic states, can be defined as the illogical and irresistible impulse to reject

The Story of the Eye is a logical gesture of irrationality which expresses the need of a limitless loss which Bataille maintains is necessary to remain rationally within the system. Bataille's transgressive text transgresses the prohibition against the transgressive act, but without text there could be no transgression. From within the system, however, the gesture must always remain an irrational gesture of refusal to remain within the system. The text, for the
material or moral goods that it would have been possible to utilize rationally (in conformity with the balancing of accounts)" (128). What he presents to the reader, in the form of the narrative text,

When we started to think about Communication guerilla , the political space seemed barren and closed. It was the early nineties, the west was at war against Irak, and the political depression of the nineties was at its full height. After the breakdown of bureaucratic socialism, capitalism seemed to have won once and forever. Moreover, Germany saw a wave of violent racist attacks against immigrants, backed up by a humanist discourse of the elites who were in favor of immigration control. All the counterinformation in previous years had not changed the political climate to the better. We were tired of performing political rituals like trashing McDonald?s, stopping this nuclear waste transport or that neo-fascist meeting. It wasnt fun, and anyway, these rituals had become the included other of the state: the roles were set, they knew how to deal with this kind of attacks. They even needed them to provide a symbolic balance against the extreme right and to justify new repressive laws. So we started experimenting with another mode of political articulation. Interventions and theoretical analysis were constantly interacting. We looked at the practices of Dada, the Situationists, the Provos in the Netherlands, the Indiani Metropolitani in Italy, the various psychogeographic societies, the Spaguerilla in Germany, the Yippies in the US, pranksters and many other freaks, experts in Culture Jamming , and fools. We blagged anything that could be useful to distort the unwritten rules of the Cultural Grammar, to subvert this powerful machinery which is constantly producing acceptance of existing power relations and normality. In recent years, this kind of creative political articulation has become more popular among artists/activists. How do these witty, sometimes silly attacks against multinational corporations, politicians or other authorities work? A first insight comes from communication theory. Why is nobody listening? The best argument is useless if nobody wants to hear it. Thanks to continuous production and dissemination of counter information, the world knows that the globe is warming, which didnt stop US president Bush to block the limitation of emissions in the Kyoto. Everybody knows that people in Global South are forced to work in sweatshops under terrible conditions, but this knowledge has hardly any consequences. And although we all know that people who migrate to Europe usually have a reason for that, the border regime around it is getting tighter and tighter. So although critical information is widely available, it doesnt necessarily lead to political consequences. Most traditional politics on the left are based on a simple model of communication: Information is sent bya sender to a receiver via a channel. Implicitly, it is assumed that the message is received as intended by the sender. The conclusion is that those who own the sender control what people are thinking by manipulating the messages. If the messages were not manipulated, more truthful, people wouldnt go along with oppressive politics. As a consequence, we would have to take power over the TV- and radiostations, the newspapers and the internet thats revolution. Or at least we need to produce our own media. Zet while counter-information is necessary to keep ourselves up-to-date, it usually cannot compete with industrially produced mainstream media. This model of communication has been critizised for its linearity. For instance, it cannot explain why the system of burocratic socialism in East Germany collapsed, although it controlled all the senders. A more complex model of communication theoryfocusses less on the messages and more on the codes that are being used in the production and the reading of messages. The sender encodes information before shipping it off to the channel. He uses a discourse which corresponds with his own interests and social/political positioning Before the receiver understands the message, she has do decode it according to her own codes. Both sets of codes are not necessarily identical, and not all receivers use the same set of codes. The same message can acquire different, even contradictory meanings, depending on the discoursive codes people use to read them. Although the discoursive power structures strongly suggest certain preferred readings, oppositional readings are possible. Umberto Eco, the Italian cultural theorist calls this process the variability of interpretation. Tactics the art of the weak This phenomenon leads to interesting principles, methods, practices and techniques for Communication guerilla. A guerilla in the territory of communication can make use of the cracks and contradictions of the system. Relying on a tactical mode of political articulation, it doesnt need to seek control of the endless chain of signification. To the contrary, it plays on the messyness of the communication process, creating communicative situations with a potential to unleash divergent and deviant readings of situations and informations. To use a military metaphor: Communication guerilla breaks out of the traditionally strategic approach to political articulation. It acknowledges that the social movements on the left are not powerful enough to engage in a trench war between us and them, that we are acting on a territory organized by the law of a foreign power. What French philosopher Michel de Certeau states fortactics in general, also applies to Communication guerilla: Lacking its own place, it operates in isolated actions, blow by blow. It takes advantage of oportunities and depends on them, being without any base where it could stockpile its winnings, build up its own position, and plan raids. What it wins it cannot keep. This nowhere gives a tactic mobility (...). It must vigilantly make use of the cracks that particular conjunctions open in the surveillance of the proprietary powers. It poaches in them. It creates surprises in them. (...) In short, a tactic is an art of the weak. Multinational corporations, as agents of hegemony, use a strategic approach. They are furiously defending a territory made of images, colours, music, logos. Since the marketing strategies are increasingly shifting from selling products to selling lifestyles, the brand needs to be defended at all costs. Image has become capital. At the same time, by depending on the elusive power of signs, they have become more vulnerable to the blows of Communication guerilla. Counter information is continuously producing information on the injustice of existing power relations or the devastating work conditions in the sweatshops, to name only a few fields of intervention. Subvertisers like the US-based adbusters , or the campaigners against Nike , communicate such messages by using the first principle of communication guerilla: detournement. By distorting the signs and symbols available in public space, they suggest a morerealistic reading of advertisements. The simple detournement of a billboard, for instance, shell becomes hell -creates a moment of surprise and confusion in the receiver. It suggests the use of oppositional codes and bring out meanings other than those intended by the advertisers. The aura of a mythical figure like Microsoft boss Bill Gates can be detourned by a pie placed into his face at the right

moment needless to say that this also works for politicians, philosophers and other representatives of power. With wit and humour, detournements create a distance between the sender and the receiver, they cause embarassement to those whose normality is usually accepted. Sometimes, it is more effective to slip into the mind of the political counterpart rather than creating a distance through detournement especially since the cultural grammar in western industrialised societies with its ideology of democracy and free speech has ways to neutralise obvious criticism. Overidentification as the second principle of communication guerilla relies on the phenomenon that every ideology has a hidden reverse, something that must not be articulated under any circumstances, a taboo (Zizek). Overidentification is about speaking out this hidden tabu in language of power itself, clearer than the political counterparts yet in a perfect copy of the tone of their voices and the looks of their symbols.

The goal is neither the interruption nor the permanent appropriation of a communicational channel. The goal is the theft and distortion of messages. We start from the premise that the significance of communication is not just what is said but also the form of the communication itself. It is the aim of guerrilla communication to de-legitimate the present state of power and sovereignty which by now seems so normal and unalterable. In order to do that, one has to understand its multifaceted structures and manifestations. Guerrilla communication tries to deal with the normative power structures of the established forms of communication as well as the internalised power structures at the level of subject. This requires that situations be manufactured
in which it becomes perceptible - for at least a brief moment - that everything could actually be quite different. Why Communication Guerrilla? Guerrilla communication is a result of the experiences with the past concepts of the oppositional public realm (Gegenffentlichkeitskonzepten) and educational practices of the left. In late capitalist societies nothing can be won from the unimpeded spread of truth.

Traditional left politics frequently seem to rely on the persuasive power of the rational argument. The confidence that the simple presentation of information represents an effective form of political action is still unshakeable. Critical content is supposed to be sufficient to tear up the network of manipulating messages, with which the media influence the consciousness of the masses. The main problem here is the acceptance of the idea: 'whomsoever possesses the senders can control the thoughts of humans'. This hypothesis comes from a very simple communication model which only focuses on the 'sender' (in the case of mass communication usually centrally andindustrially
organised), the 'channel' which transports the information, and the 'receiver'.

consequences. Face it, even if stories of disasters, injustice, social and ecological scandals are being published, it has almost no consequences.
Reflections on the interrelations between the reception of information, knowledge and the options to act within a social context have tackled how information becomes meaningful and how it thenbecomes socially relevant. Information by itself has neither meaning nor consequences - both

are created only through the active reception and through the scope of action of the audience. But this basic banality has far too rarely been taken into consideration within the framework of radical politics.

A government needs an opposition, every opinion needs to be balanced with anotherone, the concept of representative democracy relies on the fiction of equal exchange. Every criticism which doesnt fundamentally shatter the legitimacy of the ruling system, tends to become part of it. Guerrilla communication is an attempt to intervene without getting absorbed by the dominant discourse. We are looking for ways to get involved in situations and at the same time to refuse any constructive
participation.

Power relations have a tendency to appear normal, even natural and certainly inevitable. They are inscribed into the rules of everyday life. Communication guerrillas want to create those short and shimmering moments of confusion and distortion, moments which tell us that everything could be completely different: a fragmented utopia as a seed of change. Against a symbolic order of western capitalist societies which is built around discourses of rationality and rational conduct, guerrilla communication relies on the powerful possibility of expressing afundamental critique through the non-verbal, paradoxical and mythical.
To be quite clear: guerrilla communication isnt meant to replace a rational critique of dominant politics and hegemonic culture. It doesnt substitute counterinformation, but creates additional possibilities for intervention. But also, it shouldnt be misunderstood as the topping on the cake, a mere addition to the hard work of 'real' politics and direct, material action.

In its search for seeds of subversion, guerrilla communication tries to take up contradictions which are hidden in seemingly normal, everyday situations. It attempts to distort normality by addressing those unspoken desires that are usually silenced by omnipresent rules of conduct, rules that define the socially acceptable modes of behaviour as well as the 'normal' ways of communication and interpretation. To give just a simple example: Most people will say that it is not
okay to dodge paying the fare, even if there is awidespread feeling that public transport is over-expensive. If, however, some communication guerrillas at the occasion of an important public event like the funeral of Lady Di manage to distribute fake announcements declaring that for the purpose of participating, public transport will be free, the possibility of reducing todays expenses may tempt even those who doubt the authenticity of the announcement. Communication guerrillas attack the power-relations that are inscribed into the social organisation of space and time, into rules and manners, into the order of public conduct and discourse. Tactics of the everyday are expressing desires other than those included in strategic planning, and in that way, they often acquire a subversive meaning. Blagging, dodging the fare, scateboarding in posh places are not necessarily meant to be political interventions. The deportation alliance, Horror Vacui and GelbNIX were/are explicitely situated within a wider critical discourse articulated by social movements, in which strategic demands like open borders, "no German soldiers in Kosovo" or "open access to the inner cities" were made. Yet they were not confined to the designated political space marked by a culture of political parties, demonstrations, info-stalls, demands, frustrating meetings and the speech of morality. Taking tactics further, contextualising political issues in unusual ways and refusing any clear definition can help to widen the political space. Detournements, happenings and similarinterventions can insert the political into daily life, if the organisers are taking their own experience with public space and their own local knowledge into account. If you go to the city for summer sales, you hardly expect your bag being controlled by police. This caused irritations to many shoppers at the day of "GelbNIX", distorting a positive image of police who should be there to protect "us" and reserving controls to "others". Ideally, activists are part of a specific local environment and mentality, which enables them to draw on detailed local knowledge, local anger, local pleasures and the secret subversive desires of ordinary people. For example, quite a few citizens chose to use the free ticket for public transport in one of the fake leaflets, although they could have realised with a little consideration that it was a prank - and maybe they did. The same leaflet was reported in the local section of the newspaper with some amusement - another sign that it had met localinterest. Only if an intervention works locally, it can become relevant in a broader context. A focus on images and playful forms can create new alliances. If it is not necessary to agree on every detail of the political analysis, preparations can be more inclusive. Artist and activist scene are beginning to overlap. A new arena of political articulation opens up again - and by using images, music, bodies, performances, activists are rediscovering the pleasures of aesthetic experiences as a part of political speech. Times have changed since the Manual of Communication Guerilla was first published. While the changes of social and economic power are not in our favour, in the metropolis, a wave of energy amongs activists is tangible. This is most visible in the new global movement which articulates itself in protests against organisations like the world bank and the international monetary fund. Large numbers of protesters, new/old forms of protest like carnivals, creative interventions and direct actions, maybe also the web-hype have put this movement on the agenda of mainstream media. The appropriation of information technology has facilitated a process which creates a worldwide communication network and allows for rapid communication within a global activist scene'. In this sense, the conditions of struggle have improved, certainly in the space of representation (everybody knows that there is a new, globally connected socialmovement).Yet in provincial areas, local neighbourhoods, small towns and border areas, we are fewer than the images of mass demos from Seattle, Washington, London etc would suggest. Locally, we continue to rely on the molecular tactics of communication guerilla, the kind of actions anyone can prepare without the backup of thousands of activists. While the large mobilisations are highlights in the activists calendar, communication guerilla-type actions are effective interventions in local public spaces, effective not only in terms of annoying the conservative hypocrits, ordinary racists and apostles of normalisation, but also for our own pleasure and against the frustrations we are facing in daily life.

LUFTHANSA EXAMPLE
GRUPPE IN 2003 ( HTTP://ionek.strg.at/bin/view/Main/KgUsingLan) An example for the sophisticated use of both principles is a campaign of the German anti-racist network kein mensch ist illegal against the deportation of refugees and immigrants. Or, in the logic of overidentification: Its objective is to help the
German airline Lufthansa to get out of their obligation to do the dirty business for the German government by brutally carrying out deportations. This tongue-in-cheek help turns out to be a continous image pollution, which constantly puts the airline into trouble. The image of Lufthansa (and every other airline) is based on the fantasy of a world without any borders, open for unlimited excitement, for adventurous explorations of its hidden treasures (or business opportunities). The hidden reverse of this ideology of globalisation is migration and border-regimes with all their deadly consequences. Lufthansas image relies on the assumption that they make

thepleasures of travelling available to every customer, that they can take you to the most remote parts of the world at any given time. What may not be articulated is that at the same time, Lufthansa is coercing unwanted migrants to go where they certainly do not want to go the country they were forced to leave for political or economic reasons, or even a place where they have never been before. The Lufthansa Campaign is using this hidden reverse in many creative ways. In the first leaflet in spring 2000, they worked with the principle of overidentification by producing a fake to advertise the new deportation class which they had invented for Lufthansa. The leaflet features the brand colours, a detourned logo and the typography of Lufthansa. It
looks exactly as if it was produced by the airline itself. It also reads like an original, since the corporate language with its customer-friendly overtones is copied as well. Moreover, the content overidentifies completely with thelogic of profit. Lufthansa, it is explained, is obliged

to carry out deportations for the German government. Yet the company is aware that the presence of handcuffed people with special helmets over their heads and sticky tape across their mouths reduces the comfort of the paying passengers, expecially if they resist their deportation. To compensate for this inconvenience, Lufthansa has launched the deportation class and from now on offers seats on such flights at reduced prices. This fake leaflet was placed in the information stalls of Lufthansa in airports, at tourist fairs and travel-agents. The logic was credible enough, many people including customers and journalists thought the airline capable of such cynical marketing and consequently started attacking it. Lufthansa was forced to publish a dementi to distance itself from the incriminating leaflet. But the company found itself in a double bind: They couldnt deny the fact that they are carrying out deportations, and that this caused inconveniences; at the same time, they didnt offer any compensation.
The logo of the deportation class was the winner of a poster competition which the campaign had tendered until March 2000. It called for detournements of Lufthansa branding to make connections between the ideology of free travel and deportations. The submitted posters were put together in a travelling exhibition and presented in many museums. Interestingly, Lufthansa only objected in October 2000, when they discovered that the exhibition is also available on the internet. They threatened to sue the owner of the webpage. Supported by kein mensch ist illegal, he didn`t back down. To the contrary within a few days, the exhibition was mirrored on dozens of other international webpages. Lufthansa ended up looking really stupid, a web-newbie with no respect for the freedom of art. In the end, Lufthansa begged the campaign to stop embarrassing them. The company faced tactical embarrassement and interventions on many other fronts. The passenger lobby group fair fly staged invisible theatre at airports and tourist fairs, demonstrating the act of deportation. At an information stall at the Expo in Hanover, plastic-bags with the logo of the deportation alliance were distributed filled up with information about deportations. At the annual shareholder meeting in summer 2000, along with more traditional protests, a concerned shareholder pointed out the financial risks involved in deportations. In several cases, deportations were stopped

through direct action.

And yet it is rare that any of this ever occurs to critics, who seem to believe that "subversion" consists of vicarious identification with subversives, and of telling everything one knows to one's enemies. It is nonetheless already the case that, in critical discourse, behind all the humanistic myths of communication, understanding, and interpretive fidelity, one finds the tactical value of misinterpretations. In an argument it is often crucial for combatants not to know their enemy, to project instead a paper figure, a distortion, against which they can conceive and reinforce their own positions. Intelligence, here, is not only knowledge of one's enemies but the tactical lies one tells about them, even to oneself. This is so regular a phenomenon of discursive conflict that it cannot be dismissed as an aberration that might be remedied through better communication, better listening skills, more disinterested criticism. There is, in other words, already plenty of fog in discursive warfare, and yet we tend to remain passive in the face of it, and for the most part completely and uncritically committed to exposing ourselves to attack. Imagine what might be possible for a writing that is not insistently positional, not devoted to shoring itself up, to fixing itself in place, to laying out all its plans under the eyes of its opponents. The standpoint, identification with and defense of one's own thought, the demand that one be on one's own side, that one stand by one's word, is so standard a feature of intellectual ethics and politics that it has been taken completely for granted. The Tofflers argue that the Gulf War demonstrated the failure of entrenchment -- Iraq's older, industrial, sedentary strategy -- against advanced military technologies of speed, stealth, and coordinated intelligence. attempt to set conditions for "ideal speech" is inevitably exclusive. The model of an ideal speech situation establishes a norm of rational interaction that is defined by the very types of interaction it excludes. The norm of rational debate favors critical argument and reasoned debate over other forms of communication. (29) Defining ideal speech inevitably entails defining unacceptable speech. What has been defined as unacceptable in Habermas's formulation is any speech that is not intended to convey an idea. Habermas's discursive formulation is inadequate primarily because it does not explicitly and rigorously attend to the disciplinary effects of contemporary societies explained so creatively by Foucault. Habermas has been routinely criticized for ignoring the productive nature of contemporary power. His juxtaposition of system and life-world in The Theory of Communicative Action relies on a separation of good power from bad (communicative power v. steering media), and posits an ideal speech situation freed from the distortions of power. Many of the survivors have stated that the rapes and the rape-torture which precedes murder is often videotaped by the perpetrators. The evidence that this is going on in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia is overwhelming and yet nothing has been done about it. Indeed, it has been alleged by survivors that UNITED NATIONS TROOPS have actually taken part in these rapes within the rape camps. This should give one pause for thought when you consider that United Nations forces may one day be conducting "Peace Enforcement" operations in America. There is more than enough evidence to indicate that a highly evolved reptilian life form is interacting with human beings. To Lasn, the networks' refusal broadcasts their fear of his message. He believes that if Adbusters and other advocacy advertisers had the same access to the airwaves as General Motors and Calvin Klein, product marketers would end up substantially reducing their own TV advertising. To validate his vision, Lasn refers to the showdown that occurred between antismoking ads and cigarette commercials in the late '60s after the FCC ordered broadcasters who aired cigarette commercials to run opposing viewpoints for free. "Those antismoking ads were so potent that, ultimately, the industry couldn't compete," recounts Lasn. "Every time you were watching one of those pro-smoking ads, you just started snickering because they just didn't make sense anymore." Actually, it was an act of Congress, rather than the antismoking ads, that forced cigarette commercials off television. And ultimately, that move did little to hinder the tobacco industry's advertising efforts; it just spent more on other media. Ironically, cigarette sales increased dramatically in 1971, the first year of the cigarette-ad ban, probably because antismoking commercials, which had indeed caused a decline in cigarette consumption, could no longer be aired for free. Still, if we are to learn anything from the cigarette-ad battle, it's that the most likely industry response to uncommercials would be to simply air more commercials -- in the realm of political advertising, has one attack ad ever failed to spawn a rebuttal? But how excited are we supposed to get about the notion that anticonsumerist arguments can be trivialized with the same smug, soundbitten language that graces Bud Light and Camel ads? Lasn's paradigmatic cigarette ads are again a case in point. Taking for granted that kids start smoking because tobacco companies have convinced them that smoking is "cool," modern antismoking ads simply promote not smoking as being even cooler. What gets lost in the exchange is that being "cool" is a pretty flimsy reason to do anything. In short, advertising may indeed be the operative language of the modern world, but it's a fairly limited idiom, designed to make you feel rather than think. For those whose message is simple -- Buy me! -- the language of advertising works beautifully. For those trying to express a more complicated idea, it's less effective. Of course, parodies and publicity stunts (such as the soundbite-ready flacktivism of Buy Nothing Day) are effective as baitand-switch tactics: You hook them with punch lines and eye candy, then educate them after you have their attention. But are the Absolut vodka ad collectors who call up Adbusters in search of its parodies of the well-known ad campaign sticking around for such schooling? And wouldn't it be just as effective if the funky-fresh brandinistas of the world simply applied black electrical tape to their eyes instead of their logos? In the end, is virtuous mindlessness better than materialistic mindlessness?
