INTRODUCTION OF POEM

A poem is an expression of a vision that is rendered in a form intelligible and pleasurable to others and so likely to arouse kindred emotions. Some forms of poems are specific to particular cultures and genres, responding to the characteristics of the language in which the poet writes. They are an act of discovery and require immense effort to write and to be understood. Studying poetry can truly open up the subject of English for some students. By paying attention to how craft, structure, sound and tempo work dynamically in a successful poem, poetry organically connects literature to the study of Creative Writing and language. But poetry isnt well-loved by everyone. A poem may appear to mean very different things to different readers. It may be defined as verbal composition designed to convey experiences, ideas or emotions in a vivid and imaginative way, characterized by the use of language chosen for its sound and suggestive power and by the use of literary techniques such as meter, metaphor and rhyme. It is a short piece of imaginative writing in the metrical way. It is a form of literary art, written in verse. The writer of a poem is called the poet. Some poets such as William Shakespeare, John Keats, Alexander Pop, John Milton are famous for their great poems.

WHY USING POEM IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Using poetry is similar to those for using songs and many activities that you do with songs can be adapted to poetry. Any authentic material exposes students to some real English and can be very motivating for your students, provided they are supported throughout the task. The other great thing about poems is for students to have the opportunity to see the language work creatively and freely. Poems can be used in many different ways and the more you use them the more uses you will find for them. Poetry has numerous uses and benefits in the English language-learning classroom. Besides adding to the range and variety of uses of English, poetry provides cultural insights and forms a basis of discussion. Poems are often thoughtprovoking and help teachers to break away from routine exercises; they are often humorous and add a motivational buzz to classroom activity. Poetry is pretty neat because the messages that convey along with its form and structure can take on different styles. Sometimes there are huge gaps on the page, words that may not make sense to the reader, but make perfect sense to the author.
