Lesson 5: Sorting by Shape

Candidate: Kelsey Kinard Date/Time of Lesson: 3/27/13 12:40 PM School: Early Childhood Center Subject: Mathematics (Geometry)

L#: L00174596 Grade Level: 4K Cooperating Teacher: Shannon Balentine Lesson Title: Sorting Shapes by Shape

Curriculum Standard(s) Addressed: M-4K-3.4: Sort and classify objects by one attribute (size, shape, or color) M-4K-4.1: Identify two-dimensional shapes: circle, square, triangle and rectangle PKG 1: Correctly name shapes regardless of size Cross Curricular Connections: Music uses the song 2D Shapes I Know to review the shapes circle, triangle, square, and rectangle Instructional Objective(s) Criteria: Given a cutting and pasting activity, the students will accurately sort circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles by shape. Assessment(s) of the Objective: Pre-assessment: Each student is assessed individually. Give the student two of each buttons of each shape (square, circle, triangle, rectangle, and hexagon) of different sizes and colors. Have the student point to the corresponding shape when the teacher says the shape name. Then have the student sort the different shapes according to shape on a divided piece of paper. Question to ask: Did they correctly point to the shape when given the shape name? Did they know the name of each shape? Did they sort the shapes correctly? During assessment: Observe the students as they sing the song, name the shapes, and brainstorm different ways to sort the shapes. Also observe for accuracy during the group activity as they sort the shapes into columns.

Questions to ask: Did they participate? Did they know the correct name for the shapes? Did sort the shape(s) in the corresponding columns correctly?

Post-assessment: The students will do a cutting and pasting activity sheet. Questions to ask: Did they correctly sort and past the cut out circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles according to shape?

Materials: Pre-assessment, during assessment, and post assessment sheets Pencil Shape buttons SMARTboard 2D Shapes That I Know song Word document page of 3 circles, 3 squares, 3 triangles, and 3 rectangles mixed randomly Page of the same shapes sorted by color Page of the same shapes sorted by size Page of the same shapes sorted by shape SMARTboard notepad document with 4 columns and 20 shapes to sort by shape Worksheet for cutting out shapes (24) Worksheet for pasting the shapes (24) Scissors (19) Glue (19) Shape Sorting Tray Magnetic shapes Painters tape Magnetic white board Picture cards of shapes from everyday life

Prerequisites: The students need to be familiar with the following shapes: circle, triangle, rectangle, and square. The students also need to have the fine motor skills for cutting and pasting.

Procedures: 1) Gather the students on the carpet for the lesson and remind them of the correct way to behave during instruction time. 2) Tell the students that we are going to be working with shapes and briefly describe what we will be doing during whole group and small group. 3) Review the shapes by playing the song 2D Shapes That I Know. Encourage the students to listen and sing along. 4) Pull up the Word document. This should already have 3 circles, 3 triangles, 3 squares, and 3 rectangles or different colors and sizes. 5) Have the students name each shape on the page. 6) Talk about sorting and the different ways we can sort things. 7) Have the students brainstorm ways they can sort the shapes on the board. 8) Go through each page of the document and have the students tell how the shapes were sorted (whether by color, size, or shape). 9) After the shapes have been sorted all three ways, reemphasize why you sorted the shapes like that. 10) Tell the students that today we are going to focus sorting by shape. Remind the students that no matter what the color or size may be, it doesnt change the shape. 11) Open the pre-made SMARTboard notepad with 4 columns and 20 shapes. 12) Invite the students up one by one to move a shape into the corresponding column. 13) Once all the shapes have been correctly placed, take a moment as a class to look over the columns. 14) Explain and demonstrate the small group activity. 15) Separate into small groups for the cutting and pasting activity. 16) After the activity, students who need additional help can work with the teacher one on one using the Shape Sorting Tray.

Accommodations: For students with behavioral problems and are a disruption to the class, there will be a teacher or assistant nearby for them to sit beside at the table. For early finishers, there will be another activity that deals with shapes for them to work on.
