w Americans Essential Questions: *How do I use the main idea and details to express my understanding of a text?, *What is the difference in an Antonym and Synonym and how does knowing what they are help in my reading? *What are the things a Sentence needs to be Complete? *What are the important parts of an Informational Writing Piece? Workshop Vocabulary: communicate, currently, immigrant, income, influence, minimum, motivate, percent, policy, trend Day #1: Introduction to READ 180 Class Whole Group Only Meet the Students/Teacher(s) Introduction Discuss Rules/Procedures for the Class and Grading/Discipline Policies Day #2: Introduction to READ 180 Software and Station Expectations Whole Group Only Review what students are expected to accomplish and how they are to accomplishment what they are supposed to at the three stations. Using Smartboard walk students through the software READ 180, SRI, and Reading Counts. Work with students to introduce Cold Read do as a whole group and walk students through the process of finding correct answers using various test taking strategies. Remind students that from this point on every two weeks they will complete a Cold Read on their own for test prep. *Earthquake in Haiti- #1 Before leaving today have students sign off on the Syllabus Received/Reviewed sheet Day #3: Students go to the Computer Lab and Complete the SRI Whole Group Only Take students to the computer lab to complete the Scholastic Reading Inventory students need to take their time and read everything that comes up. The test is

between 25-30 questions and students should be informed not to skip questions because it is better to make your best guess. After students complete the SRI students are instructed to complete the READ Reading Inventory. Explain that this is for teacher information only to have a better idea of what they read and things that they enjoy that involve reading. *Reading Inventory - #2 Day #4: Workshop #1 Introduction and Discussion Whole Group: Students watch anchor video. When video is complete have students talk to a partner and discuss two challenges that immigrants face when coming to America then discuss whole group. Complete a web on Smartboard that discusses what we know about immigrants Where do they come from?, Why do they come here?, and What Care the challenges they face when leaving their country? (TE 8G) Small Group: Work on Reading Comprehension - Key Ideas (TE 8H). Have students review the Video Story from the Anchor Video At Home In America. Retell and discuss story. Reading Comprehension Practice Ellis Island: World War II-Present (read out loud and have students answer on their own and then review together)-#3 Computer/READ 180 Software: Students work for 15-20 minutes on READ 180 software students should be reminded to use time wisely and that grades will be taken every two weeks so they MUST visit and work in every zone to assure that they have a score in each category. Independent Reading: Students read silently or with a partner to complete the goal of a minimum of 5 books read and then a Reading Count Quiz completed on each book they read with a minimum Reading Comprehension score of 70. Day #5: Workshop Reading Introduction and Vocabulary Work Whole Group: Preview the 3 reading that are in the workshop. Follow procedures in TE page 8 top left. Read page 8 two ways Cloze students fill in words when you stop reading

and complete a choral read. Call out vocabulary words and rate how well students know the words (use rating scale no words just hold up fingers). Small Group: Students work with one another and teacher to complete the Academic Vocabulary Graphic Organizer (TE 9). Discuss each word and give examples to include on the chart. *Academic Vocabulary - #4 Computer/READ 180 Software: Students work for 15-20 minutes on READ 180 software students should be reminded to use time wisely and that grades will be taken every two weeks so they MUST visit and work in every zone to assure that they have a score in each category. Day #6: Reading #1- School Before Soccer pg. 10 Whole Group: Discuss target words and Set Purpose (TE 10 top left).Read (Cloze Reading) and Discuss School Before Soccer. Follow lesson in TE page 10 Small Group: Students work with teacher to better understand main idea using School Before Soccer (Round Robin Read First) where/how we find the main idea of a story and then how we locate strong supporting details. (TE 11) Students then fill in their own Main Idea Organizer. *Main Idea Organizer - #5 Computer/READ 180 Software: Students work for 15-20 minutes on READ 180 software students should be reminded to use time wisely and that grades will be taken every two weeks so they MUST visit and work in every zone to assure that they have a score in each category.

Independent Reading: Students read silently or with a partner to complete the goal of a minimum of 5 books read and then a Reading Count Quiz completed on each book they read with a minimum Reading Comprehension score of 70. Day #7: Reading #2 Fitting in! page #12-#14 Whole Group Discuss Target Words, Set Purpose (top left TE pg. 12), and Read Fitting In (Round Robin)- After Reading Use Discussion Questions (TE13&Text13). Small Group Use lesson on TE 15 Practice locating Main Ideas in different sections of the article, after practicing have students work as a group to complete the graphic organizer as a whole group (on board/out loud) to show understanding.
