Acting I: Script Research

Answer the following questions for the scene that you are preparing. Use a
narrative style in answering the questions. Word process and cite your sources.

1. Title, playwright, characters: Every Morning,

2. What is the copyright of the play? Playwright: Mary Kappe

3. What is the time period of the play? Where does the play take place (include day, time,
locale, season, year, etc): The monologue takes places in a apartment in New York city. It
is in the morning at 6:00am present day. March 21 2009. Spring,

4. Research the time period of the play. Include things like social mores, norms, politics of
the day, major events of the time-local, national and world- any piece of information that
makes the time come alive for you. Walk away from this research with a working
knowledge of when the play takes place.

5. How does the time period affect the portrayal of the character- what clothes are involved,
what inventions may have not existed at this particular time, what kinds of behavior was
acceptable and what was not acceptable? Behavior that is shown through the script is that
the character is a smoker, as they have a ash tray on the floor of the bedroom.

6. What challenges does this play present the actor? How do you plan to address those
challenges? One major challenge is that, me as an actor is not a 25 year old male in New
York.

7. How does the character differ from the actor? The character differs from the actor as the
actor is not a smoker.

8. Are there any specific skills are required to play the character? What does the character
know that you have had to learn?

9. What new words have you learned since working on the script. Write them down and
define them. No words are new.

10. Briefly describe how research will dictate how you will walk, talk, stand, speak, focus,
etc. Researching will require observation of a middle aged male, single, and a smoker.
From what I’ve seen in life so far. They usually will dress in looser baggy clothing or
“hip”/”retro” look. They walk with a laid back posture and walk slightly slower than
most.
