An original idea
Social Studies 5th Grade 5-4.4 The student will demonstrate an understanding of American economic challenges in the 1920s and 1930s and world conflict in the 1940s. Essential Questions: How did WWII start? (When Germany entered Poland) How did U.S. enter WWII? (Retaliation from the bombing of Pearl Harbor) What caused the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki? (WWII, when the allies were at war with the axes powers) Agenda: Review Essential Questions Think about it.. Review Read PACT book Group activity Assessment Ticket out the door! The students will be able to explain the principal events related to the involvement of the US in WWII; the major battles of the European theater; and the events in the Pacific theater such as Pearl Harbor and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I will use different instructional strategies, like reading to children and allowing them to read to me. The PowerPoint will help the visual learners and the class as a whole, especially the students who speak little English. The presentation is colorful and fun. For students who mastered the concept, I will give them harder problems to figure out.

Varying Objectives for Individuals Needs

Statement of Purpose

It is important that the students learn about WWII because it shaped the world from that point on. The outcome of the war determined the kind of world many people would live in today. Teacher: Social Studies Workbooks Computer Prezi website PACT book Students: Paper Pencils Markers PACT book

Materials and Resources

Anticipatory Set

Think about it. This strategy is great for this lesson. The students had to put themselves in the shoes of a Jew during WWII and imagine what it was like. They also had to explain how they felt about Hitler, knowing that he blamed them for all their problems.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION

Oral review. We will review the essential questions and guide them through a beginning review. I will create a WWII booklet for them to review so they will know what is expected of them. We will discuss the essential questions together. We will also complete a few problems off of the worksheet together. I will ask questions based on the support documents of that standard to see if the students understand. I will also use the thumps up strategy to check for understanding. The students will have to complete a worksheet. Their answers from the worksheet will show me if the students retained the information taught to them. Ticket out the door! This technique shows me what the students learned. I will ask a question and the students must write their answer on a scratch piece of paper. If their answer is correct, then they can line up at the door to leave. The students will have to create a WWII Booklet. They will also have a vocabulary review sheet to complete, which is in their workbooks. The WWII booklet will need to be completed at home. They are allowed to use other sources, like the internet, to complete it. They are also allowed to go to the public library or any community agency to complete the assignment and get information.

Technology

I will complete a review PowerPoint using an internet source, called Prezi. It will be presented on the Whiteboard so all students can see. Prezi is a great source to use when presenting information to students. They really enjoy it.

Connection Across the Curriculum

Math: We will find out how long WWII lasted and compare it to the length of WWI. Science: We will discuss science while speaking on the destruction of WWII. English: The students will have to complete all answers in complete sentences using correct grammar.

PART III: REFLECTION

I believe my instructional strategies worked out pretty good. The students loved the technology so they definitely retained the information from that. I randomly choose students to answer specific questions throughout the lesson. Overall, I believe I created a good lesson plan.

Strengths

Weaknesses

I didnt allow the students to read the information from the PACT book because I wanted the classes to be at the same place. Some students were not paying attention and I addressed some, but not all. The time frame for some of the classes, as well, is a weakness. I have to rush a lot of the information to them because they dont have the time like the previous classes.

Suggestions for Improvement

I would use more technology and have the students more engaged in the lesson. Using sticks with the students name on them is another great strategy that I plan to use in the future.
