Materials

- Quiz 15 - Handout 1 (H1) Verb Chart - Handout 2 (H2) World Pass textbook [Men & Women](Pgs. 133-135) - Handout 3 (H3) Vocabulary Chart. - PowerPoint (Quiz 15; Quiz 15 Review; Verb List 16) - Blackboard - Projector Note: the numbered titles are all bold faced. All other bold-faced words are to be written on the blackboard. Words in quotations are to be spoken by the teacher. Materials are underlined. Include the time allotted for each activity.

Procedure

Introduction: T will greet Ss and asks about their weekend.

Verb Tense Conjugation (Time allotted: 15 Minutes) Objective: SWBAT develop an understanding of the conjugation of verbs by filling out a chart and filling in the blanks of example sentences.

Quiz (5 Minutes): Ss complete Quiz 15. Ss who were not at the last class will complete the quiz as best as they can because class will review answers after. Ss will copy given verbs from PPT. Complete the quiz by filling in the infinitive, simple past, and past perfect forms of the verbs. After quiz, class reviews answers. Ss volunteer to answer for each verb

and correct answer appears on PPT


If new students show up, T will remind Ss of activity. T passes out H1 to Ss who do not have it. 5 New Verbs: Using PPT, T shows infinitive verb. Ss volunteer to provide simple past and past participle forms. T reveals answer & Ss copy correct answer (5x). Using PPT, Ss will volunteer to answer Verb Sentences by filling in the blank with the correct form of the verb. Ss will write 2 sentences of their own using the new verbs.

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on understanding of old vocabulary by correctly completing the quiz and comprehension of new vocabulary by conjugating verbs in example sentences.

TRANSITION: Nice job with the new vocabulary! Ok! Todays topic is still about the relationships between men & women. And this time, we are going to read stories about celebrities and their love lives issues.

Get ready to read: (Time allotted: 20 Minutes) Objective: SWBAT apply guessing meanings from context by completing reading activities in which they will read the magazine profiles and then will complete a vocabulary chart with the appropriate answers.

Pre-Activity: T gives Ss handout 2 (H2) and asks them to complete exercise A in which they will read the magazine profiles while paying attention to the underlined words and phrases. T asks Ss to work in pairs and discuss the following questions what do all three of these peoples love lives have in common? If you had to use an adjective or two to describe each person, what would you use? Why? Each pair of Ss will share their answers to the previous questions with the class. While-Activity:

T refers Ss to the underlined words and phrases in the readings and asks them to guess their meanings. T reminds Ss of the guessing meaning from context reading skill to help them figure out the meanings of those words and phrases. Post-Activity: T gives Ss handout 3 (H3) and asks them to complete it by writing their thoughts of the meanings of the previously mentioned words & phrases. Ss discuss their answers with their partners. T will ask Ss to read aloud their answers to the class. T will ask Ss Why do you think so many celebrities have unhappy lives?

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on their abilities to guess the meanings of new words and phrases in the magazine profiles by completing the vocabulary chart with accurate answers.

TRANSITION: Good job class! I agree. It is really difficult to maintain relationships. Unfortunately, most troubled couples would consider breaking up as the solution to all of their problems. While I disagree with that, breaking up is the only thing a troubled couple would think of in order to end their agony. The article that we are going to read next is about the best ways to break up with someone.

Reading: (Time allotted: 35 Minutes) Objective: SWBAT practice skimming by completing reading activities in which they will skim an article for significant details that will help them complete a chart and answer comprehension questions.

Pre-Activity: T will refer Ss to exercise A in which they will work with a partner and list different ways that they can break up with someone. Ss will share their ideas with the class.

While-Activity: T will ask Ss to complete exercise D by reading the article first, then

completing the chart with the appropriate answers. T will review answers with the class.

Post-Activity: T will refer Ss to exercise E in which they will answer five reading comprehension questions by skimming the whole article closely for the correct information. T will review answers with the class.

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on their utilization of skimming by providing the correct answers in the reading exercises.

TRANSITION: Nice job! Let us now discuss about the methods of breaking up that were mentioned in the article. Do you agree with those methods? What do you think is the kindest way to break up with someone?

4. Wrap Up: (Time allotted: 10 Minutes) Discussion: T will ask Ss if they agree with the advice given in the reading and which method they would use to break up with someone and why.

Assessment 1. Ss will be evaluated on quiz performance to check their comprehension of verbs in the infinitive, simple past, and past participle conjugation. 2. Ss will be evaluated on their abilities to correctly infer meanings of words & expressions associated with commitment issues from contexts through reading activities. 3. Ss will be evaluated on their abilities to skim an article to look up for important information in texts during the reading activities. Anticipated 1. Some Ss may be hesitant to participate in the discussions which can be addressed Problems by encouraging and reassuring the student that his/her opinion is valuable and nobody is going to laugh at him/her. 2. Some Ss might be slower than others in the reading activities which can be addressed by setting up an online stopwatch.
